If an employer is hiring you, confirm the SGK start date with HR
Enrolment is legally from your first working day and the employer files it — but ask HR to confirm it has been done and to give you the SGK registration, because the entitlement only becomes usable once you appear in the system. SGK covers you, a spouse and children under 18, gives near-free access to state hospitals and family health centres, and covers SGK-contracted private hospitals for a top-up fee. Industrial employers here also usually run their own occupational-health scheme on top.

Students: check the SGK application window, because it closes
International students in Türkiye may apply to be enrolled in SGK within a limited window from first registration — commonly three months — after which the option is lost for that period of study and you must fund private cover instead. Over a multi-year degree the saving is substantial. Ask the international office at Erciyes or Abdullah Gül in your first fortnight rather than your first term.

Everyone else: buy compliant private insurance for the permit
Non-employed, non-enrolled first-year residents must show a valid private policy at the residence-permit appointment; SGK does not count for the initial permit. Since April 2025 the policy must meet raised minimums and must state explicitly that it is valid for residence-permit applications. Buy a 'yabancı ikamet' compliant plan from a Turkish insurer (Allianz, Axa, Anadolu, Aksigorta).

Register on e-Devlet, then learn where to go for what
With your YKN you can use e-Devlet, book public appointments through the Ministry of Health's MHRS system (mhrs.gov.tr, the app, or ALO 182) and read your records on e-Nabız. In Kayseri the routing is: family health centres and district state hospitals for routine care; Kayseri Şehir Hastanesi for most secondary and much tertiary work; and Erciyes Üniversitesi's teaching hospital for academic referral, complex cases and second opinions.

Know emergencies, pharmacies, and how the mountain works
Dial 112 for an ambulance; emergency care (acil) at state hospitals is provided to everyone regardless of insurance or status. Pharmacies (eczane) are everywhere and many medicines are cheap and over the counter — a foreign prescription is not legally valid, though a Turkish doctor's is inexpensive. Outside hours a rotating nöbetçi eczane is always open. On Erciyes, incidents run through 112 with jandarma and AFAD involvement and the resort has its own first-response provision; check what your insurance says about winter sports before your first day up there, because many standard policies exclude them.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Check whether your policy covers winter sports before your first day on Erciyes, not after.

Living half an hour from a 112 km resort means most residents here ski, and a great many standard health and travel policies exclude winter sports or load them heavily. SGK covers emergency and subsequent care for those enrolled, but a private-only first-year resident on a basic ikamet policy may find a skiing injury is precisely what it does not pay for. It is a five-minute check and a genuinely expensive thing to get wrong.

Ask HR to confirm the SGK filing, not just to promise it.

The entitlement starts on your first working day in law, but you can only use it once you actually appear in the system. New hires turn up at a hospital, find no record and pay privately for something they were covered for. A screenshot of the SGK registration is worth asking for in week one.

A large city-hospital campus plus a university teaching hospital is unusual depth for a city of 1.5 million.

Kayseri Şehir Hastanesi and Erciyes Üniversitesi's hospital between them make this the referral centre for a broad central-Anatolian catchment, which means complex care generally stays here rather than becoming a transfer to Ankara. For anyone weighing a provincial Turkish city on a family checklist, this is one of Kayseri's strongest cards.

The winter here is cold, dry and often still — and that combination is what makes the air worth thinking about.

At 1,050 m with a January average low of −6.7°C, clear windless days let heating emissions settle over the city. It is a milder version of the problem Bursa's basin has, and it is worth factoring into which district you live in and how the flat is heated if anyone in the household has asthma or a respiratory condition.

Common mistakes to avoid

Skiing on a basic ikamet health policy that excludes winter sports.
Assuming your employer filed the SGK enrolment without checking, then paying privately for covered care.
Missing the student SGK application window and funding private cover through a whole degree.
Trying to fill a foreign prescription as written; it is not legally valid, though a Turkish doctor's prescription is cheap.
