Things to do in Gothenburg

Neighborhood · Central, west of the moat

The oldest suburb outside the seventeenth-century walls — wooden and 'landshövdingehus' facades, cobbles, and cafés on every corner.

Local tip: The hagabulle — a cinnamon bun the size of a dinner plate — is the local ritual and every café claims the original. Walk uphill afterwards to Skansen Kronan, the 1690s fort above the district, for the free view back over the whole city.

Nature · Majorna–Linné

A 137-hectare city park with free-roaming Gotland ponies, elk and seals, a bird pond, and the Natural History Museum at its edge.

Local tip: The elk enclosure is the famous bit and the least interesting. Head instead to the Azalea valley in May, or to Plikta on a summer evening, when half of west Gothenburg is out barbecuing on the grass until it finally gets dark.

Food · Rosenlundskanalen and Kungstorget

The 1874 'fish church' on the canal and the 1889 market hall in the centre — the two rooms where Gothenburg's obsession with shellfish is on display.

Local tip: The proper local order is a räkmacka, a shrimp sandwich, hand-peeled and piled high — and the honest version is that it is expensive everywhere and cheapest away from the tourist counters. Feskekôrka reopened after a long restoration; go on a weekday morning when the trade is still wholesale.

Nature · Ferry from Saltholmen

Ten car-free islands — Styrsö, Brännö, Vrångö, Donsö — reached on an ordinary Västtrafik ferry with an ordinary Västtrafik ticket.

Local tip: This is the single most under-used thing about living here: the islands are inside the normal public transport zone, so a tram to Saltholmen and a boat to Vrångö costs the same as any other journey. Go to Vrångö for the nature reserve and the swimming rocks at the southern end.

Landmark · Hisingen, across the river

The old shipyard bank turned mobility-tech campus, with the Kuggen building, Chalmers' second campus and a skyline of cranes kept as monuments.

Local tip: The Älvsnabben passenger ferries across the river are free — no ticket, no tap — and the crossing from Stenpiren to Lindholmen takes about five minutes with the best view of the Göta älv you can get without a boat of your own.

Culture · Under the Älvsborg bridge

A 1940s boiler house under the suspension bridge, now an art hall, with the eighteenth-century Klippan quarter and a working brewery beside it.

Local tip: The graffiti wall outside Röda Sten is legal and repainted constantly, so it is different every week. Combine it with the walk out to Nya Varvet and you get the industrial waterfront that made this city, with almost no other visitors on it.
