Nitrate in central Iowa's source water climbs above the federal 10 mg/L limit for long stretches each year, and the treatment system — not the tap — is what keeps finished water compliant. Infants under six months and pregnant women are the groups public health guidance singles out. Follow the utility's own notices rather than general advice, and do not boil water to reduce nitrate, which concentrates it.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Iowa expanded Medicaid, and that is the biggest health difference from Texas or Alabama.

A low-income working-age adult in Des Moines has something underneath them; the same person in Dallas or Birmingham frequently has nothing at all. It changes how much weight to put on an employer health plan when comparing job offers between those cities, and it makes a gap between jobs far less dangerous here.

The work requirement is real, dated, and moving — check the state, not the news.

Iowa's own public notice proposed a 100-hour monthly requirement with a five-year demonstration and a specific exemption list, and the operational start date has already shifted more than once. Secondary coverage is consistently a few months behind. If you are on IHAWP, the exemption categories — carer of a child under six, SSA-determined disability, unemployment compensation, substance-use treatment — are worth reading in the original.

Polk County has a public hospital, which many US counties do not.

Broadlawns Medical Center is county-funded with its own clinics and financial assistance programme. In a country where the safety net is wildly uneven between counties, this is a genuine second layer. It requires an application and proof of income, and doing that while you are healthy is far easier than doing it in a crisis.
