Iowa's top individual rate was 8.53% as recently as 2022 and 5.7% in 2024. Senate File 2442, signed in May 2024, collapsed the entire schedule into a single flat rate of 3.8% that applies to the first dollar of taxable income and to the hundred-thousandth alike. There is no local income tax on top anywhere in Iowa, which is a real difference from Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky or Missouri. If you are comparing offers between Midwestern cities using a two-year-old calculator, it is materially overstating Iowa. Note also that Iowa's only income-tax reciprocity agreement is with Illinois, and it covers wages and salaries only.

Central Iowa Water Works draws from the Raccoon River, the Des Moines River and an infiltration gallery under Water Works Park. Fertiliser runoff from upstream farmland pushes nitrate past the federal 10 mg/L drinking-water limit for months at a stretch — as of 8 June 2026 the Raccoon had been over the limit for 136 days — and the utility's treatment capacity, not the reservoir level, is the constraint. That produced the region's first outright lawn-watering ban in June 2025 and another in 2026. Expect summer restrictions as a normal feature, do not plan a garden that needs irrigation, and if you are pregnant or have an infant, read the utility's own nitrate guidance rather than a general one.

Iowa Code 321.1A creates a rebuttable presumption of residency if you have remained in the state more than thirty days — but equally if you accept employment, register to vote, enrol a child in an Iowa public school, receive public assistance, or file for a homestead exemption. Any one of those is enough. Since you must title and register a vehicle within thirty days of establishing residency, taking a job on arrival starts that clock immediately rather than a month later. This is the trap in the otherwise gentle Iowa rulebook.

Iowa has no periodic safety inspection and no emissions testing for ordinary passenger vehicles — a genuine and rare simplification compared with Texas, Missouri or Illinois. Registration and titling are handled by county treasurers rather than a central DMV, and Iowa Code 321.20 lets you apply to any county treasurer, not only your own. When Polk County's wait is long, Dallas, Warren or Madison County offices are a short drive and frequently faster. Driver licensing also runs through county treasurers' issuance sites in most of the state.

Senate File 2472, signed 18 May 2026, replaced Iowa's long-standing homestead tax credit with a homestead tax exemption worth 10% of the property's taxable value, with a floor of $5,500 and a ceiling of $20,000, plus a further $6,500 of exempt value for owners aged 65 and over. It takes effect for assessment year 2026, meaning the bills paid in September 2027 and March 2028. Anyone who already held the credit or exemption before 1 July 2026 is converted automatically without refiling. If you buy after that, file with the assessor — it does not arrive with the deed, and Iowa's property tax is high enough that this matters.

Central Iowa gets sustained sub-zero Celsius stretches, ice storms and ground blizzards — wind lifting old snow off open farmland until visibility on I-35 vanishes on an otherwise clear day. Buy the block heater cord, keep a blanket and a shovel in the boot, and learn the difference between a winter storm warning (snowfall) and a blizzard warning (wind and visibility). Downtown's four-mile enclosed skywalk system is the local answer: it links most of the office towers, several hotels and a good deal of the parking, and from December to February a lot of the working population genuinely does not go outside between the car and the desk.
