Things to do in Da Nang

Where locals actually go — culture, neighbourhoods, nature and a few hidden gems.

Editor's picks

A local's shortlist — the places worth your time first, each with a tip.

Sơn Trà peninsula

Nature · Northeast of the city

A forested mountain rising straight out of the sea at the end of the beach, with red-shanked douc langurs living on it and a road that loops the whole thing.

Local tip: Ride the loop early — the langurs feed in the morning and the afternoon light is flat. The upper road is genuinely steep and slick after rain, and rental scooters with worn tyres are the most common cause of foreigners ending up at the hospital here.

Mỹ Khê beach & the beach road

Nature · Ngũ Hành Sơn / Sơn Trà seafront

Twenty unbroken kilometres of soft sand and a promenade that the whole city uses at five in the morning and again at five in the evening.

Local tip: Vietnamese Da Nang swims at dawn and dusk and stays out of the midday sun entirely; the beach at noon is empty for a reason. Rip currents are real between October and February and the flag system on the lifeguard towers is worth learning.

An Thượng

Neighborhood · Behind Mỹ Khê beach

The dense grid of guesthouses, coworking spaces, brunch cafés and craft beer that is the default landing zone for remote workers.

Local tip: Everything you need is inside four blocks, which is the attraction and the trap — rents here carry the foreigner premium and the Vietnamese city is three streets inland. Live here for three months, then decide whether you want Hải Châu at two-thirds the price.

Hội An old town

Culture · 30 km south, inside the merged city

A preserved trading port of Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese merchant houses, lantern-lit and now administratively part of Da Nang.

Local tip: Go on the fourteenth night of the lunar month when the electric lights go off for the full-moon lantern festival, and go on a weekday. Since the 2025 merger, residence paperwork for Hội An is handled as Da Nang, which quietly removed a whole layer of provincial admin for people living down there.

Hải Châu & the Hàn market

Food · West bank of the Hàn river

The working centre of the city — the market, the offices, the banks and the food that locals actually eat.

Local tip: Rents run twenty-five to forty per cent below An Thượng for the same specification, transport links are the best in the city, and the mì Quảng and bún chả cá around Hoàng Diệu are better and half the price of anything near the beach.

Nam Ô reef & fishing village

Hidden gem

Neighborhood · Liên Chiểu, north of the city

A four-hundred-year-old fishing village at the foot of Hải Vân pass, with a moss-covered reef that turns emerald green for a few weeks a year.

Local tip: The reef greens in late February and March at low tide and is one of the few genuinely local sights left on this coast — it is fifteen kilometres from Mỹ Khê and almost no foreign resident goes. The village also makes the nước mắm the region is known for, sold from houses rather than shops.
