Government research institutes
ETRI, KRISS, KAERI, KRIBB, KIGAM, KRICT, KIMM, KISTI and the rest of Daedeok Innopolis
Around two dozen government-funded institutes sit in one district established in 1973, covering electronics, standards, atomic energy, bioscience, geoscience, chemistry, machinery and scientific computing. It is the densest research cluster in Korea and hiring follows the national R&D budget cycle rather than the business cycle.
Universities & deep-tech spin-offs
KAIST, Chungnam National University, Hanbat National University, the Innopolis startup belt
KAIST is Korea's flagship science and technology university and its campus is inside the research district rather than beside it. The spin-off ecosystem around it is the most credible deep-tech startup scene outside Seoul, and it runs largely in English at the graduate level.
Central government administration
Government Complex Daejeon — Korea Customs Service, Korean Intellectual Property Office, Public Procurement Service, Korea Forest Service, Statistics Korea, Military Manpower Administration
Six national agencies relocated to a single complex in Dunsan, which is why Daejeon feels administrative in a way no other non-capital Korean city does. It also anchors a large professional services market in patents, customs brokerage and public procurement.
Defence & aerospace research
Agency for Defense Development, Hanwha's Daejeon facilities, the space and propulsion research base
Korea's principal defence research agency is here, along with major Hanwha aerospace and systems operations. Much of this sector is security-cleared and effectively closed to foreign nationals, which is worth knowing before you build a job search around it.
Semiconductors, nano & materials
The Daejeon nano-semiconductor national industrial complex in Yuseong, KRICT and KRISS spin-offs, materials suppliers
A national industrial complex for nano and semiconductor industries was approved for Yuseong in 2023 and is the city's attempt to convert research strength into production. It is early — treat announced tenants and timelines as plans rather than as employers.
Public utilities & institutions
K-water, KOMSCO, Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety, Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science
The national water authority and the state mint are both headquartered in Daejeon, part of the same 1970s-80s decentralisation that created the research district. They are stable, unionised, Korean-language employers with limited foreign hiring but heavy procurement footprints.
