Registration against your passport is compulsory and is done at purchase. Use an operator shop at Makoni or in Harare rather than a street vendor, so the line is genuinely in your own name.

Choose Econet unless you have a reason not to
The widest network and the largest mobile money agent footprint, which is what matters in a city with few branches. NetOne is often cheaper on data if you have coverage where you live.

This is the priority, not the phone plan. Kombi fares, market purchases and rent to a small landlord all move this way. The ZiG and USD wallets are separate pots.

Chitungwiza's national destination code is 70, so numbers here are dialled 0270 while Harare's are 0242. Council offices, clinics and schools still publish landlines and this catches people out constantly.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Chitungwiza has its own dialling code, which surprises people who think of it as part of Harare.

POTRAZ's numbering plan assigns it national destination code 70 while Harare has 4. It is a small administrative fact that reflects a real one: this is a separate municipality with its own council, hospital and services, not a suburb.

The mobile money wallet matters more here than the phone plan.

With few bank branches and a largely cash-and-agent economy, EcoCash is the payment system for most of the city. Register the line in your own name — a wallet on someone else's identity is not legally yours when you need to recover it.

The emergency number depends on your network.

112 reaches emergency services on Econet and Telecel, 114 is police on NetOne, and 993, 994, 995 and 999 are the fixed-network fire, ambulance, police and general emergency codes. There is no single number that works from every handset.

Data cost is a real share of a local wage.

Zimbabwean bundles are expensive by regional standards, and against a Chitungwiza income that is a household budget line rather than a rounding error. Buy in bundle, always, and check whether your employer will contribute if you work remotely at all.
