Get the licence or ID within 30 days
The clock runs from the day you move and applies even if your out-of-state credential is still valid. Bring a second proof of Idaho residency and take the Star Card at the same visit.

Drive the vehicle to the DMV within 30 days
Idaho requires the vehicle to be present so a DMV employee can inspect the VIN before titling. This is not a mechanical inspection and it is not an emissions test — it is a check that the vehicle is the one on the paperwork.

Bring the title, and the right supporting document
Bring the current title and registration. If the vehicle is not yet titled in your name, the title must be signed and the price entered; if the price is not on the title you need the bill of sale. If a lienholder holds the title, bring their name and address. A lost title means applying for a duplicate from the issuing state first, which takes weeks — start it before you move.

Skip the emissions test entirely
Idaho has none. The legislature repealed the state inspection-and-maintenance requirement effective 1 July 2023 and the EPA approved removing Ada County's programme. Guides written before that still describe a Treasure Valley smog check; it does not exist.

Register annually, with no property tax attached
Idaho registration fees scale with the vehicle's age rather than its value, and there is no annual personal property tax on cars — unlike Kentucky or Virginia, where the recurring vehicle tax is a serious line item. Budget for the fee alone.

Plan for winter in the foothills and canyons, not in the valley
Boise itself gets modest snow and clears quickly. Bogus Basin Road, the canyon routes and the passes east on I-84 are a different proposition, and Idaho requires chains or adequate traction devices where posted. If your weekends involve the mountains, tyres matter more than the city's snowfall suggests.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Idaho abolished emissions testing, and half the internet has not noticed.

The legislature repealed the statewide vehicle inspection-and-maintenance requirement with effect from 1 July 2023, and the EPA subsequently approved removing Ada County's programme — which had been in place since 1984 because of carbon monoxide levels. There is now no emissions test anywhere in Idaho. Relocation guides, forum posts and even some notices still describe one, so people budget time and money for an errand that no longer exists.

You have to bring the actual car.

Idaho titles a vehicle only after a DMV employee has physically inspected the VIN. Newcomers who arrive expecting a counter transaction, or who shipped the car and left it at a friend's place across town, get sent away. Take the vehicle with you the first time.

No annual property tax on the car, which is a real difference.

Idaho charges an age-based registration fee and nothing else. Kentucky and Virginia both levy an annual ad valorem tax on vehicles — Norfolk at $4.33 per $100 of assessed value — which on a newer car runs to hundreds of dollars every year. If you are comparing western and eastern US cities, this is one of the larger recurring cost differences and it never appears in a salary comparison.

Both deadlines are 30 days, which is unusually symmetrical.

Most states split them — Kentucky is 10 days for the car and 30 for the licence, Virginia 30 and 60, Colorado 30 and 90. Idaho makes both 30, so there is no ordering trap here; there is simply one month to do both, and the vehicle step needs the vehicle.

Common mistakes to avoid

Turning up to title a vehicle without the vehicle.
Budgeting for an emissions test that Idaho abolished in 2023.
Discovering the title is missing after arriving, and waiting weeks for a duplicate from another state.
Assuming a valid out-of-state licence extends the 30-day deadline. It does not.
Buying a car for the city and then driving Bogus Basin Road in January on summer tyres.
