Status, Social Security number and an Idaho Star Card
There is no post-arrival registration in the United States: your I-94 record is your status. In the first weeks you need a Social Security number if you are work-authorised, or an ITIN if not, and an Idaho credential within 30 days of moving — whether or not your existing licence has expired. Idaho's REAL ID is branded the Star Card, and getting one at the same appointment costs nothing extra beyond bringing a second, different proof of Idaho residency.

Both of Idaho's arrival deadlines are 30 days: one for the driver's licence, one to title and register the vehicle. The registration step is unusual in that you must physically bring the car so a DMV employee can inspect the VIN. What you do not have to do is any kind of test — Idaho repealed its statewide vehicle inspection-and-maintenance requirement from 1 July 2023, and the EPA approved removing Ada County's emissions programme, which had run since 1984. There is no safety inspection either, and no annual property tax on the vehicle.

The friction is postpaid contracts, which run a credit check you cannot pass on arrival. What to know before you go
Your Health Idaho closes on 15 December, six weeks before the federal deadline
CriticalIdaho runs its own marketplace and its Open Enrollment runs 15 October to 15 December each year. Every national article, every federal reminder and every friend in another state will tell you the window closes in mid-January. If you follow that advice in Idaho you will miss it entirely and go a full year without marketplace coverage unless you have a qualifying life event. Put 15 December in your calendar the day you arrive.
Two deadlines, both 30 days, and you have to bring the actual car
CriticalIdaho gives you 30 days from moving to get a driver's licence or ID card — whether or not your out-of-state one has expired — and a separate 30 days to title and register your vehicle. For the second you must drive the vehicle to the DMV so an employee can inspect the VIN, which surprises people expecting a paperwork errand. Students at Idaho colleges and active-duty military and their dependents are exempt from the licence requirement.
There is no emissions test and no safety inspection anywhere in Idaho

So Boise registration is a genuinely short errand compared with Virginia, which inspects every car annually, or Denver, which sits inside Colorado's emissions area. It offsets this with a grocery credit claimed on the state income tax return, currently $155 per person, and you can instead submit receipts for the actual sales tax paid on food up to a higher cap. You have to file to get it, which means filing is worth doing even in a year you owe nothing.
Air quality is the seasonal problem, twice a year
ImportantWinter inversions trap cold air and particulates in the valley for days, and late-summer wildfire smoke can settle in for weeks. Both are genuinely bad for anyone with asthma or a cardiac condition, and both are invisible in any climate summary of Boise's 200-odd sunny days. Check AirNow rather than the forecast, and know that driving 15 minutes up into the foothills usually gets you above a winter inversion.

Micron is headquartered here and is the only US-based manufacturer of DRAM memory, which makes Boise a genuinely strategic semiconductor location rather than a branch-plant town. Its fab expansion is the largest single private investment in the state's history.

HP, Clearwater Analytics, Cradlepoint, PayPal, Truckstop
HP's Boise site has been the company's printing engine for decades and has seeded most of the local hardware and firmware talent. Clearwater Analytics is the home-grown fintech success, and remote workers from Seattle and the Bay Area thickened the scene through the 2020s.

J.R. Simplot, Lamb Weston, Albertsons, Chobani (Twin Falls), Amalgamated Sugar
Simplot and Albertsons are both headquartered here — a grocery chain and a potato-processing giant in the same small city. Agricultural processing across the Treasure Valley and Magic Valley is a much larger employer than the state's image suggests.
Healthcare
St. Luke's Health System, Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine
St. Luke's is the largest private employer in Idaho and runs the state's only children's hospital. Idaho trains relatively few doctors, so clinical roles here are chronically short-handed and open to newcomers with transferable credentials.

Boise Cascade, IDACORP / Idaho Power, PacifiCorp
Boise Cascade is a wood-products company headquartered in the city it is named for. Idaho Power is heavily hydroelectric on the Snake River, which is why Idaho's retail electricity prices are consistently among the lowest in the United States.
Outdoor recreation & higher education
Boise State University, Scentsy, Bogus Basin, Ridge to Rivers
Boise State is the largest university in the state and a real employer. Bogus Basin, the non-profit ski area, is 16 miles from downtown — closer to a state capital than almost any other in the country.

The Boise River Greenbelt
Nature · Along the river, downtown to Lucky Peak
Some 25 miles of riverside path threading the whole city, linking parks, the university and the downtown core.
Local tip: This is the commute, not just the walk — a lot of Boise cycles to work on it year-round. Start at Ann Morrison Park and head east; the stretch through the Boise State campus and out to Barber Park is the good half.
Ridge to Rivers trails
Nature · The foothills, immediately north of downtown
Nearly 200 miles of connected foothill trails starting where the streets stop, with the whole valley laid out below.
Local tip: Camel's Back and Hulls Gulch are walkable from the North End with no car at all. Go up here on a winter inversion day — fifteen minutes of climbing usually puts you above the murk into sunshine.
The Basque Block
Culture · Grove Street, downtown
A single block holding the Basque Museum, the 1864 Cyrus Jacobs house, a boarding house, a market and a handball court — the heart of one of the largest Basque communities outside Europe.
Local tip: Go for the museum and stay for the food. Order the beef tongue at Leku Ona if it is on, and check whether Jaialdi — the festival held roughly every five years — falls in the summer you arrive.
Idaho State Capitol
Landmark · Downtown, Jefferson Street
The only state capitol in the United States heated by geothermal water, drawn from an aquifer 900 feet below the city.
Local tip: Free, open to the public on weekdays, and the geothermal system is the interesting part — the same aquifer heats several hundred downtown buildings, which is a district-heating scheme nowhere else in the country matches.
Bogus Basin
Nature · 16 miles north, up Bogus Basin Road
A non-profit community ski area 45 minutes from downtown, running night skiing on weekdays and a mountain coaster and bike trails in summer.
Local tip: Because it is a non-profit, season passes are strikingly cheap and go on sale in spring for the following winter. Buy then; the walk-up price is a different world.
Hyde Park & the North End
Hidden gemNeighborhood · 13th Street, north of downtown
A four-block village of pre-war storefronts inside Boise's oldest residential neighbourhood, with the foothills trailheads at the top of the street.
Local tip: Most visitors do downtown and miss this entirely. Sit outside at the Hyde Park bars on a summer evening, then walk straight up 8th Street into Camel's Back and the trail network — that combination is the whole argument for Boise in about an hour.
