What to know before you go
Register at the Einwohneramt within 14 days — and know which canton you are registering in
CriticalBasel-Stadt is a city-canton of three communes: Basel, Riehen and Bettingen. Cross into Allschwil, Binningen, Münchenstein or Reinach and you are in Basel-Landschaft — a different canton with different tax rates, different health-insurance premium regions, a different school system and a different vehicle office. These places are ten minutes from the Marktplatz. The registration deadline is 14 days either way, but where you register decides a great deal more than your postcode.
Buy health insurance within three months — and check which premium region you land in
CriticalBasic KVG cover is compulsory, bought individually, and is not an employer benefit. Basel-Stadt is the third most expensive canton for 2026, and the adult premium is what you actually pay: CHF 545.10 a month on average, against a national adult average of CHF 465.30. The CHF 470.10 figure quoted in most coverage is the canton's all-ages average, which is not the same number. Premiums are set per canton and sometimes per region within a canton, so a move over the Basel-Landschaft line can change the bill materially. Compare on the federal tool each autumn; the figures reset every January.
If you commute from Germany or France, the rules are completely different from each other
CriticalA German resident working in Basel is taxed in Germany, with Switzerland withholding a maximum of 4.5% of gross salary that Germany then credits — and losing that status if you fail to return home on more than 60 working days in the year. A French resident working in Basel is taxed in France under the 1983 agreement, with no Swiss withholding at all provided the employer holds a stamped residence attestation. Same building, same payroll, two different treaties. Advice from a colleague on the other side of the border is not advice for you.
Cross-border shopping got meaningfully more expensive in 2025
ImportantSwitzerland halved the duty-free allowance for private imports from CHF 300 to CHF 150 per person per day on 1 January 2025. Beyond that you declare and pay Swiss VAT, and the customs posts around Basel are the most heavily used in the country. Germany's separate €50 minimum for reclaiming German VAT on an export certificate is being reworked alongside a digital app — this is genuinely mid-reform, so check the current position before planning a big shop.
Fasnacht is not a public holiday and the city stops anyway
ImportantIt starts at exactly four in the morning on the Monday after Ash Wednesday, when the street lights go out for Morgestraich, and runs for three days — the drey scheenschte Dääg. Nothing about it is on the official holiday calendar, but schools close, offices empty and the centre is impassable. Book leave. It is on the UNESCO intangible heritage list and it is the one week a year Basel is not reserved.
Basel is small and its culture density is not
Good to knowRoughly forty museums in a city of 175,000, the oldest public art collection in the world at the Kunstmuseum, the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, and Art Basel each June, which triples hotel prices for a week. The Bank for International Settlements is here too, which is why the global banking rules are called the Basel Accords. It is a small city that behaves like a much larger one.
