Around 1.6 million ferry passengers and 4.2 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, with year-round routes to Greece, Albania, Montenegro and Croatia. The Balkan connection is the city's oldest commercial fact.

The Politecnico anchors Puglia's aerospace and high-tech districts and is the main pipeline into local engineering employment. Puglia's technology-district model is unusually developed for southern Italy.
ICT & software services
Exprivia and a cluster of software and systems-integration firms across the Bari–Molfetta corridor, plus delivery offices of national groups
The most credible non-public white-collar route into the city for a newcomer with technical skills, though the pay is southern and much of the interesting work is specified elsewhere.
Manufacturing & automotive components
Bosch's Bari plant, component and machining suppliers across the province, Master Italy at Conversano
The province has a real, long-established engineering base rather than a token one — and, like automotive suppliers everywhere, one going through a difficult transition away from diesel.
Agri-food & furniture
Divella and Granoro in pasta, olive-oil producers across the province, Natuzzi at Santeramo in Colle
Puglia produces a very large share of Italy's olive oil and durum wheat, and Natuzzi built a global furniture business from the Murgia. Both sectors export heavily and both hire in logistics and commercial roles.
Public administration & health

Puglia's regional government is headquartered here, making public employment a large share of the professional labour market. Recruitment is through Italian concorsi, open to EU citizens and, for many roles, long-term residents.
