Open a digital account in week one
Revolut, N26, Wise and the Spanish neobanks open on a passport and NIE within days, giving you a usable IBAN before a branch appointment is available. This covers your deposit and first month's rent, which matters because Spanish landlords expect a transfer rather than cash.

Ask explicitly for a cuenta de residente
Bring the padrón certificate and say the words. Alicante branches serve enormous numbers of non-resident owners and will open that product by default. The difference is real recurring money in fees, plus a certificate you would otherwise have to keep renewing.

Compare the fee waiver conditions, not the headline product
Spanish current accounts commonly carry monthly or quarterly maintenance charges, typically waived if you direct your salary and a minimum number of direct debits into the account. Two banks with near-identical products can differ by well over a hundred euros a year depending on whether you meet their specific conditions. Ask what the waiver requires before signing.

Set up domiciliación for everything
Rent, utilities, phone, the community fee, the IBI property tax and social security all expect to pull from an account by direct debit rather than be pushed to. Many providers price domiciled payment lower. Without a working Spanish IBAN you end up paying manually and late.

Get a certificado digital or Cl@ve early
The electronic identity credential is what lets you deal with the Agencia Tributaria, social security and the ajuntament online instead of chasing appointments. It is obtained with your TIE and one in-person verification. Nothing else removes as much friction from a first year in Spain.

Understand the Modelo 720 obligation before your first filing
Spanish tax residents must declare foreign accounts, securities and property above a threshold in each of three categories, and there is now a separate Modelo 721 for cryptoassets held abroad. These are information returns rather than taxes, with their own deadline, and they catch a very high share of arrivals here because so many keep a house or a pension somewhere else.

Things most newcomers don’t know
Alicante branches open non-resident accounts by reflex, and it costs you for years.
The province has one of the largest concentrations of foreign second-home owners in Europe, so branch staff default to the non-resident product. It carries higher fees and depends on a certificate that must be periodically renewed — if it lapses, the bank can restrict the account. Once you are on the padrón you qualify as a resident for banking purposes. Many people open the wrong account in their first week and never convert it.

The certificado digital does more for your first year than any bank product.
Almost every Spanish administrative process has an online path that requires an electronic identity credential, and the online path has no appointment queue. With a certificado digital or Cl@ve you file tax returns, request padrón certificates, check social security records and handle DGT procedures from a laptop. Without it you are competing for cita previa slots for things that did not need an appointment at all.

The Modelo 720 catches an unusually high share of arrivals on this coast.
The obligation to report overseas accounts, securities and property applies to every Spanish tax resident, and the Costa Blanca population is disproportionately likely to have kept a UK house, a pension pot or a brokerage account elsewhere. The European Court of Justice struck down the original penalty regime as disproportionate and it was revised in 2022 — but the reporting obligation itself remains fully in force, and its deadline is separate from the Renta.

Fee waivers, not interest rates, are what an account actually costs here.
Unlike the UK, where free current accounts are the norm, Spanish banks charge maintenance fees as standard and waive them on conditions — usually a domiciled salary plus a set number of direct debits, sometimes a card spend minimum. Someone paid from abroad frequently fails every condition and pays full freight. Ask specifically what a foreign-source income does to the waiver before you choose the bank.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Letting a branch open a non-resident account when you qualify as a resident.
- Delaying the certificado digital and queueing for appointments you did not need.
- Not asking what conditions waive the maintenance fee, especially if paid from abroad.
- Missing the Modelo 720 or the newer Modelo 721 in your first year as a tax resident.
- Transferring large sums at a Spanish bank's retail exchange rate rather than through a specialist.
