Adelaide is on ACST, UTC+9:30 — thirty minutes behind Sydney and Melbourne, and it observes daylight saving. From October to April, when Queensland does not, Adelaide is on ACDT at UTC+10:30 and is therefore half an hour AHEAD of Brisbane despite being 1,600km west of it. Calendar invites from interstate get this wrong constantly.

Medicare does not cover ambulance transport anywhere in Australia, and South Australia charges for it. SA Ambulance Service sells its own subscription at roughly AUD 106 a year for a single covering SA, or about AUD 125 for Australia-wide cover, with family rates around double. Rates are reset annually, so check the current figure. It is a fraction of a single call-out and it is the first thing Queenslanders moving here forget.

Only Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are excluded from designated regional Australia. Adelaide is Category 2, which means a regional nomination here attracts 15 extra points toward a subclass 491 and opens state nomination streams closed to the big three cities. If permanent residence is your goal, this is the strongest structural reason to choose Adelaide.

Adelaide Metro completed its Tap and Pay rollout when trains joined trams and buses on 20 February 2026. Paper MetroTickets have been withdrawn from sale and are no longer accepted anywhere on the network — unused ones can be transferred to a metroCARD at the Adelaide Metro InfoCentre. A bank card or phone works everywhere at the regular fare; keep a metroCARD or the Buy and Go app if you are entitled to a concession, since contactless only charges the standard rate.

The Adelaide Fringe is the second-largest fringe festival in the world after Edinburgh, and it overlaps with the Adelaide Festival, WOMADelaide and the motor race. Short-term accommodation triples in price, rentals disappear into holiday letting, and the CBD is unrecognisable. Do not plan a February or March arrival around finding a place to live.

Adelaide housing is comparatively cheap and South Australian electricity is comparatively expensive — the state runs on a very high share of wind and solar but retail prices have long sat at the top of the national range. A poorly insulated older house through a 40°C week is where the money actually goes. Ask about insulation and reverse-cycle air conditioning at inspection.
