Skilled migration to South Australia — 482, 190 and 491
The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa in December 2024 and is the standard employer-sponsored route. Alongside it, Skilled & Business Migration South Australia nominates candidates for the permanent subclass 190 and the provisional subclass 491 — and because Adelaide is classified regional, the 491's 15 extra points and its regional residence requirement can both be satisfied while living in a capital city. For occupations and salary levels that fall outside the standard programs, SA also operates two Designated Area Migration Agreements that concession English, work experience and the income threshold for approved employers.

Once you become a permanent resident of South Australia you have 90 days to hold a South Australian licence. Whether that is a counter transaction or a full testing program depends on which country issued your licence: since 1 May 2025 there are two categories only — recognised jurisdictions convert with no tests, and everyone else sits a theory test, receives a temporary permit valid for three months, and must then pass a Vehicle On Road Test. Seventeen jurisdictions, including Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, South Africa, Poland and several EU states, moved into the testing group on that date.

Every Australian SIM must be identity-verified before activation — a regulatory requirement rather than a carrier preference. A foreign passport plus an Australian address is enough for prepaid. Three networks carry everything: Telstra, Optus and TPG Telecom (Vodafone), with dozens of resellers on the same towers for far less. Superannuation, now 12% of ordinary earnings, is money you own and temporary residents can reclaim on departure. What to know before you go
South Australia runs on a half-hour offset, and it changes twice a year
CriticalAdelaide is on ACST, UTC+9:30 — thirty minutes behind Sydney and Melbourne, and it observes daylight saving. From October to April, when Queensland does not, Adelaide is on ACDT at UTC+10:30 and is therefore half an hour AHEAD of Brisbane despite being 1,600km west of it. Calendar invites from interstate get this wrong constantly.
Buy SA Ambulance cover — Medicare does not pay for it
CriticalMedicare does not cover ambulance transport anywhere in Australia, and South Australia charges for it. SA Ambulance Service sells its own subscription at roughly AUD 106 a year for a single covering SA, or about AUD 125 for Australia-wide cover, with family rates around double. Rates are reset annually, so check the current figure. It is a fraction of a single call-out and it is the first thing Queenslanders moving here forget.
All of South Australia counts as regional for skilled migration
ImportantOnly Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are excluded from designated regional Australia. Adelaide is Category 2, which means a regional nomination here attracts 15 extra points toward a subclass 491 and opens state nomination streams closed to the big three cities. If permanent residence is your goal, this is the strongest structural reason to choose Adelaide.
Paper tickets are gone — tap a card or phone
ImportantAdelaide Metro completed its Tap and Pay rollout when trains joined trams and buses on 20 February 2026. Paper MetroTickets have been withdrawn from sale and are no longer accepted anywhere on the network — unused ones can be transferred to a metroCARD at the Adelaide Metro InfoCentre. A bank card or phone works everywhere at the regular fare; keep a metroCARD or the Buy and Go app if you are entitled to a concession, since contactless only charges the standard rate.
Mad March moves the whole city, including the rental market
Good to knowThe Adelaide Fringe is the second-largest fringe festival in the world after Edinburgh, and it overlaps with the Adelaide Festival, WOMADelaide and the motor race. Short-term accommodation triples in price, rentals disappear into holiday letting, and the CBD is unrecognisable. Do not plan a February or March arrival around finding a place to live.
Budget for electricity, not for rent
Good to knowAdelaide housing is comparatively cheap and South Australian electricity is comparatively expensive — the state runs on a very high share of wind and solar but retail prices have long sat at the top of the national range. A poorly insulated older house through a 40°C week is where the money actually goes. Ask about insulation and reverse-cycle air conditioning at inspection.

The Barossa, Clare, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills sit within an hour of the CBD, and the corporate, export and viticultural science jobs are in the city rather than the vineyards.

The University of Adelaide and UniSA merged into Adelaide University, which opened in January 2026 — one of the largest university mergers in Australian history and a major local employer in its own right.

Adelaide Central Market

Around 70 traders under one roof since 1869 — produce, cheese, smallgoods and the Asian food strip of Gouger Street immediately outside.
Local tip: Go on Saturday afternoon in the last hour. Traders discount hard rather than carry stock, and it is the cheapest good produce in the city. Weekday mornings are for browsing, not for bargains.
North Terrace cultural boulevard

The Art Gallery of South Australia, the South Australian Museum, the State Library, the Botanic Garden and the university, all free and all on one street.
Local tip: The Museum's Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery holds the largest collection of its kind anywhere and almost nobody queues for it. Start at the eastern end and finish at the Botanic Garden's Palm House.
Glenelg & Henley Beach
Nature · Western beaches
Flat white-sand gulf beaches with genuinely calm water, reached from the CBD by a heritage tram that runs down King William Street.
Local tip: Glenelg gets the crowds; Henley and Grange are quieter with better food. Take the tram to Glenelg at sunset — the gulf faces west, so this is one of the few Australian capitals where you watch the sun go into the sea.
Adelaide Hills — Stirling, Hahndorf & Mount Lofty
Nature · 20–30km east
Cool-climate wine country, a German settler village, and a summit lookout over the entire city and gulf, all within half an hour of the CBD.
Local tip: Hahndorf is the coach-tour stop. Drive fifteen minutes further to Stirling or Aldgate for better food, or walk the Waterfall Gully to Mount Lofty track and get the view without paying for parking at the top.
McLaren Vale & the Fleurieu
Landmark · 40km south
Shiraz and grenache country running down to the coast, with cellar doors that are architecturally serious and a beach at the end of every road.
Local tip: Adelaide is the only Australian capital where three major wine regions are inside an hour. Do McLaren Vale on a weekday, finish at Port Willunga's cliff beach for sunset, and use a driver — the police target the Victor Harbor road hard.
Port Adelaide & Semaphore
Hidden gemNeighborhood · Inner north-west
The state's original port, with intact colonial warehouses, a working dolphin sanctuary in the river, and a long quiet beach at the end of the tram line.
Local tip: Hart's Mill on a Sunday and the Semaphore foreshore are where locals go and visitors do not. The Port River dolphin population lives in the harbour year-round and can be seen for free from the wharf — no boat required.
