Worth knowing

The threshold landed at roughly ZAR 651,000 rather than the R1,000,000 the government floated when the visa was announced — a large difference, and older commentary still quotes the higher figure.
The tax rule is specific, not a vague 'may become liable'. If you are tax-resident in a country with a double-tax agreement with South Africa, you must register with SARS only once you are present for more than an aggregate 183 days in any 12-month period. Without a treaty, registration is required regardless of how long you stay.
South African tax residency itself is not a 183-day test. It is ordinary residence, or a separate physical-presence formula: more than 91 days in the current tax year, more than 91 days in each of the previous five, and more than 915 days across those five combined. Fail any limb and the formula does not catch you.
It confers no right to work for South African employers or clients.

How long it lasts: Up to 5 years, renewable.
Path to permanent residence: Permanent residence is available to critical-skills holders, and those with 5 years of relevant post-qualification experience can apply directly rather than waiting out a residence period.
Cost: Visa fee plus SAQA evaluation, professional-body registration and police clearances — the ancillary costs exceed the visa fee.
Processing time: Officially weeks; in practice months, and historically subject to significant backlogs.

Worth knowing

SAQA evaluation and professional-body registration are the real timeline, not the visa. Start both before you apply for anything.
Being on the Critical Skills List is what earns the 100 points. The points system, gazetted 9 October 2024, is what changed for the General Work Visa — for critical skills the listed occupation still carries the application on its own. It does not apply to intra-company transfers at all.
A DHA letter from the Department of Employment and Labour is no longer required for either work-visa category. Guidance still describing a labour-market certification step for critical skills or general work predates October 2024.
Police clearances from every country of 12+ months' residence catch out people with mobile careers — each one can take months.

Worth knowing

The Department of Employment and Labour certification — the old labour-market test, and for years the bottleneck on this route — was removed when the points system was gazetted in October 2024. Any guidance still requiring it is describing the pre-October-2024 regime.
The points are cumulative and the salary bands are the heaviest single lever. A mid-salary candidate with only a bachelor's degree and under five years' experience will struggle to reach 100 on qualifications alone.
The visa is tied to employer and role; changing either requires a new application.

The absence of a minimum age is the notable quirk — anyone with qualifying guaranteed income can use it, which makes it a de facto passive-income visa.
The income must be guaranteed and evidenced as such. Investment income that could stop does not qualify.
