A job offer from a Slovenian employer registered and trading, with the ESS consent that is the actual precondition for the permit
Proof of sufficient means of subsistence — from 1 April 2026, at least EUR 507.43 a month for yourself and the same again for each accompanying dependent
Recognised qualifications for the role, with nostrification where the profession is regulated
Health insurance, proof of accommodation and a clean criminal record

How long it lasts: Normally issued for up to one year initially and renewed annually while the employment continues. Longer validities exist for particular categories.
Path to permanent residence: Permanent residence after five years of continuous lawful residence, with a Slovenian language requirement. Citizenship requires ten years of residence, the last five continuous, plus a language examination.
Cost: Administrative fees and the biometric card; low by Western European standards. Diploma recognition and sworn translation are the recurring extras.
Processing time: Statutory processing is measured in months rather than weeks, and the ESS consent stage is what actually paces it. Start well before the intended start date.

Worth knowing

The permit is issued by a specific administrative unit (upravna enota) — the one covering where you will live. Slovenia is small but the units differ markedly in queue length and in how they handle unusual files.
The subsistence figure is republished as the underlying benefit base moves; the EUR 507.43 above applies from 1 April 2026 per person, including each dependent. Do not budget on a per-family basis.
Nostrification of foreign qualifications sits outside the immigration procedure and is the usual reason a file stalls. Begin it before, not after, the job offer.
Slovenia does not let a newly arrived foreigner simply register as self-employed. Self-employment as a residence ground generally requires a year of prior uninterrupted legal residence, with narrow exceptions for certain regulated professions. This blocks the 'arrive and freelance' plan that works in Czechia.

Path to permanent residence: Counts toward permanent residence at five years, and Blue Card time in other member states can be aggregated — the structural advantage over the single permit.
Cost: Comparable to the single permit.
Processing time: Similar to the single permit, though no labour market consent step of the same weight applies.

Worth knowing

The July 2025 cut from 1.5x to 1.0x the average gross annual salary is the most consequential recent change here and it is not yet reflected in most secondary guidance. If an adviser tells you the threshold is around EUR 44,000, they are quoting the old multiple.
The threshold is recalculated as the national average wage moves, so confirm the figure applying on the date your contract is signed rather than the one you were quoted at offer stage.
Recognition of your degree in Slovenia is a precondition, not a formality, and is a separate ministry procedure.

No work for Slovenian employers or clients — the permit explicitly keeps you out of the Slovenian labour market

How long it lasts: Up to one year, and it cannot be extended. A new application may be made six months after the previous permit expires.
Path to permanent residence: None on this permit. It builds nothing toward permanent residence, though holders may switch to another temporary residence category at any time if their circumstances change — which is how someone who wants to stay actually stays.
Cost: Administrative fee, the biometric card and insurance. Modest.
Processing time: Roughly one to two months. Applications go to a Slovenian mission abroad, or to any administrative unit if you are already lawfully in Slovenia.

Worth knowing

The income test is twice the average net salary and moves with it — currently in the region of EUR 3,200 a month. Because it is a formula, treat any euro figure in a blog as indicative only.
One year, no extension, six months out before reapplying. Anyone planning a multi-year base in Ljubljana should treat this as a trial period rather than the plan.
There is no tax exemption attached. Unlike Croatia's nomad permit, Slovenia offers no statutory carve-out for foreign income, and ordinary residence tests apply — which matters a great deal given Slovenia's progressive rates to 50%.
Family members can join immediately, without the waiting period that applies to family reunification on other permits. That is unusually generous and is the route's quiet advantage.

Worth knowing

Free tuition is tied to the programme and to nationality categories, not to being a student in general. Establish your exact status with the university's international office before assuming.
Students may work through the Slovenian student-work system (študentsko delo), which is a real and well-used arrangement, but it is not a work permit and does not survive graduation.

Temporary residence permit for family reunification

Worth knowing

Digital nomad permit holders are the exception to the usual waiting rule — their family can join immediately. Everyone else on a third-country sponsor's permit faces the standard prior-residence requirement.
Slovenia requires court-certified (sodni tolmač) translation. A translation certified abroad is frequently refused, which is a wasted month if you only discover it at the counter.
