Moving from Namibia to Qatar

What your passport gets you at the border — and what it takes to actually stay.

NamibiaQatarShort stay
e-Visa

Namibia passport holders need an e-visa for Qatar, applied for online before travelling.

This is short-stay visitor policy only. It does not let you work, study or settle in Qatar — that needs a residence permit.

How you actually move to Qatar

Work / sponsoredHigh confidenceVerified August 2026

Work residence permit (employer-sponsored)

Almost everyone who moves to Qatar. You need a Qatari employer holding a valid establishment card; they sponsor the permit and you cannot start it yourself.

What you need
  • Signed employment contract with a sponsoring employer
  • Attested degree certificate for most professional roles
  • Passport valid 6+ months
  • Medical commission exam (chest X-ray + blood test) within 30 days of arrival
  • Biometrics at an MOI service centre
How long it lasts
Usually 1 year, some 3-year permits; renewable while you stay employed.
Path to permanent residence
Qatar's permanent residency (Law No. 10 of 2018) is a separate, discretionary application with a quota of roughly 100 grants a year, and it generally requires 20 consecutive years of lawful residence — 10 if you were born in Qatar. Long employment alone does not grant it, and the quota means qualifying on paper is not the same as being approved.
Cost
≈ QR 50 medical + ~QR 100 QID issuance; the ~QR 1,000/yr permit is normally employer-paid.
Processing time
2–4 weeks from arrival, end to end.
Worth knowing
  • The permit is tied to the sponsor. Since the 2020 reforms you can change jobs without a No-Objection Certificate, but notice periods still apply.
  • Leaving the job ends the permit — you and any dependants get a grace period, not an automatic right to stay.
  • Do not import Gulf-wide assumptions about debt. A bounced cheque remains a criminal offence in Qatar under Article 357 of the Penal Code, and post-dated cheques are routine security for rent, car finance and loans. The UAE decriminalised insufficient-funds cases in 2022; Qatar did not, and leaving the country with a cheque outstanding is a materially different risk here.

Family residence permit

Residents bringing a spouse and children once their own QID is issued.

What you need
  • Your own valid QID
  • Salary above the sponsorship threshold (commonly cited around QR 10,000/month, role-dependent)
  • Attested marriage and birth certificates
  • Proof of suitable accommodation
How long it lasts
Matched to the sponsor's permit; renewed alongside it.
Path to permanent residence
None on its own — dependants follow the sponsor's status.
Cost
Application and QID issuance fees per dependant, plus attestation costs incurred in your home country.
Processing time
Several weeks after your own QID is issued.
Worth knowing
  • Salary thresholds and accommodation checks are applied at the ministry's discretion and vary by profession.
  • Certificate attestation is the usual bottleneck — start it before you leave home.

Investor / business owner residence

Founders setting up in Qatar, including through the Qatar Financial Centre or Qatar Free Zones, which sponsor their own entities.

What you need
  • A registered Qatari entity (mainland, QFC or free zone) with the right licence
  • Establishment / immigration card for the company
  • Capital and office requirements set by the chosen jurisdiction
How long it lasts
Renewable residence tied to the company's standing.
Path to permanent residence
Substantial investors may be considered for permanent residency, but it remains discretionary and sits inside the same ~100-a-year quota as every other applicant.
Cost
Varies widely by jurisdiction — QFC and free-zone setups differ materially from mainland.
Processing time
Weeks to months, dominated by company formation rather than the visa itself.
Worth knowing
  • Mainland ownership rules differ from QFC/free-zone rules; get the jurisdiction right before incorporating.
