Moldova passport holders can enter North Macedonia without a visa and stay up to 90 days.
This is short-stay visitor policy only. It does not let you work, study or settle in North Macedonia — that needs a residence permit.
Anyone coming to North Macedonia to work for a Macedonian employer, and the main route into the country. Work is the first item on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' list of grounds for temporary residence, and the permit is issued by the Ministry of Interior with an opinion from the Employment Agency behind it.
Residents of an EU or OECD member state who buy residential property in North Macedonia. The threshold is EUR 40,000, which is the cheapest property-linked residence ground in Europe — and the eligibility condition is narrower than the price suggests.
Two distinct groups the law treats separately: family members joining a foreigner who already holds residence here, and close family members of Macedonian citizens, who have their own standing ground.
Students at Macedonian universities, participants in international student exchange programmes, people on specialisation, vocational or practical training, volunteers, and researchers. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists all of these as separate grounds, which means separate checklists.
Independent contractors and remote workers with foreign clients. Say it plainly: North Macedonia has no digital nomad visa and no remote-work permit. This is a tax and business status, and it has to sit under a residence ground from one of the other routes.
Citizens of Serbia and Albania. Under the Open Balkan initiative the three governments agreed free movement of citizens and free access to each other's labour markets, which makes this the one genuinely privileged nationality route into North Macedonian employment.
The cheapest capital in Europe to land in — a 10% flat tax, EUR 300 rents, the largest Ottoman bazaar outside Istanbul and a 1,066 m mountain inside the city limits, set against a winter air problem nobody here pretends away.
