Nationals of the countries on Armenia's visa-free list — the EU/EEA, UK, US, Canada, Australia, Japan, the Gulf states and many others — who want to base themselves in Yerevan without applying for anything.

What you need

Nationality on Armenia's unilateral visa-free list, or covered by a bilateral agreement
A passport valid for the stay
Nothing else: no application, no fee, no sponsor

How long it lasts: Up to 180 days within any one-year period, unless a bilateral treaty sets a different term. Not per entry — the days are cumulative across the year, which is the part people get wrong.
Path to permanent residence: None. Visa-free days are entry, not residence, and build nothing toward a permanent residence permit or citizenship. If you intend to settle, you have to convert to a temporary residence permit and start the clock properly.
Cost: Nothing.
Processing time: None — it applies at the border.

Worth knowing

Armenia has no digital nomad visa and has never had one. Aggregator sites that list one are wrong. The 180-day visa-free stay is the vehicle, and it is an entry permission with no work authorisation attached to it.
The 180 days are counted across a rolling year, not reset by leaving and coming back the way Georgia's 365-day rule is. Chinese and Iranian nationals are on a different footing again — 90 days in any 180.
Separately, from 1 July 2026 nationals of a further list of countries may enter visa-free if they hold a residence permit from the US, an EU/Schengen state, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait or Oman that is valid for at least six months. The permit must be shown as a physical card or passport sticker. Confirm this is still running before you rely on it — it was introduced as a time-limited measure.
Everyone else applies for an e-visa at evisa.mfa.am, from around AMD 3,000.
Crossing to or from Azerbaijan is impossible: the border is closed and the two states have no diplomatic relations. Regional itineraries route through Georgia.
You become an Armenian tax resident at 183 days in a calendar year — or earlier if Armenia is your centre of vital interests — regardless of what your immigration status is. Residents are taxed on worldwide income at a flat 20%.

Temporary residence permit — employment

How long it lasts: One year, renewable one year at a time on the same ground. Under the framework taking effect 1 November 2026, decisions must be issued within 30 days and the card becomes biometric.
Path to permanent residence: Yes. Time on a temporary permit counts toward a permanent residence permit, which under the current rules requires three prior years of residence in Armenia plus close family or a business here. The permanent permit runs five years and is renewable. Citizenship requires three years of permanent residence with no single absence longer than six months.
Cost: A state duty of AMD 105,000 for a one-year permit. The new law raises it to AMD 150,000, but the fee increase runs on a different clock from the rest of the reform: the new procedures start on 1 November 2026 while the new fees only apply from 1 January 2027. That leaves a two-month window in which you file under the new digital system at the old price. The fee is non-refundable either way — it buys consideration of the file, not the grant.
Processing time: Around 30 days once the file is complete.

Worth knowing

The 1 November 2026 law introduces a dedicated WORK VISA — single or multiple entry for up to 120 days, not extendable, and issuable only once per calendar year — and on the published drafting expects work-based residence applicants to have entered on it. Arriving as a tourist and converting in-country is the thing most likely to stop working. If you are being hired, ask your employer which entry document they are arranging.
The reform was adopted on 20 January 2026, scheduled to commence on 1 August 2026, and deferred to 1 November 2026. Guides written earlier in 2026 describe the new rules as already in force. They are not yet.
The new law also brings in an annual government quota on the number of residence statuses granted. There is no such cap today, and it is the change most likely to turn a straightforward application into a timing problem. Nothing has been published about how the quota will be sized or allocated.
Armenia is in the Eurasian Economic Union, so citizens of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan work without a permit — a genuinely different track from third-country nationals.
There is no employer-tied lock comparable to Azerbaijan's: changing jobs means a new permit application, not forfeiting your status overnight, but do not let the old permit lapse in the gap.

Temporary residence permit — founder, sole trader or investor

Freelancers and founders who register an Armenian LLC or take individual-entrepreneur status. This is the route the post-2022 tech relocation actually ran on, because company registration in Armenia is genuinely a same-day, low-cost affair.

What you need

An Armenian company in which you are a founder or director, or registration as an individual entrepreneur
Evidence the business is real: turnover, contracts, a registered address, filed returns
A minimum capital/turnover test has applied at around AMD 2,000,000 (roughly USD 5,000) for business-based permits — confirm the current figure, it is set administratively
Passport, criminal-record certificate, proof of address in Armenia

How long it lasts: One year, renewable annually while the business keeps trading.
Path to permanent residence: Yes — it is legal residence and counts toward the three years needed before a five-year permanent permit.
Cost: Company registration is cheap (low thousands of drams plus a lawyer if you use one). Permit state duty as above — AMD 105,000 now, AMD 150,000 from 1 January 2027.
Processing time: Company registration same day to a few days; permit decision around 30 days.

Worth knowing

Read the tax regimes before you choose a structure, because Armenia's low headline rates are narrower than they look. The 1% turnover tax for high-tech companies is real — Laws HO-498-N and HO-499-N, in force 1 January 2025 and legislated through 31 December 2031 — but it requires enrolment in the state High-Tech Registry, at least 90% of sales from listed high-tech activities, and turnover under AMD 115 million. Banks, insurers, legal, accounting and management-consulting firms are expressly excluded.
The general turnover-tax regime shares the same AMD 115 million ceiling but is not 1%. The trade rate went from 5% to 10% on 1 January 2025; production is 7% and catering 12%, with documented-expense credits that leave effective floors of roughly 1%, 3% and 3.5% respectively.
The 0% micro-business regime (turnover up to AMD 24 million) has, since July 2025, excluded consulting, legal, accounting, advertising, translation, medical and — the one that catches relocated tech workers — IT and data processing. If someone quotes you 0% for freelance software work, they are describing a regime you cannot use.
None of this touches personal income tax. An Armenian tax resident pays a flat 20% on worldwide income; the company regimes sit on top of that, they do not replace it.
From 1 November 2026 the abolished 'special residence status' (the ten-year passport for ethnic Armenians and certain investors) is replaced by the five-year permanent permit, and an investor fast-track to permanent residence is promised. The qualifying amounts have not been published. Do not plan around numbers you see quoted for it.

Worth knowing

As with Georgia, Armenian medical degrees are used as a cheaper route into medicine. Recognition in your home country is the thing to verify first — it is automatic nowhere.
A study permit does not by itself authorise work; if you take a job you need the employment ground.

Spouses and close relatives of Armenian citizens or of permit holders, and — a large real-world category — people of Armenian descent.

Worth knowing

Ethnic Armenians have historically used the ten-year 'special residence status', obtainable on church or genealogical evidence. That status is abolished under the law commencing 1 November 2026; existing holders keep their rights until expiry and then move to the five-year permanent permit, reportedly without the usual three-year wait.
Armenia permits dual citizenship, which materially changes the calculus versus Georgia, where it generally does not.
