Worth knowing

The work permit and the residence permit are two applications to two different bodies. Approval of one is not approval of the other, and losing your job invalidates both — the residence permit is tied to the named employer.
Immigration's guidance is that Class B applicants should not be inside Tanzania during processing, with an exception for people changing employers, who are issued a special pass to cover the gap. Arriving on a tourist visa and 'converting' is not the designed path.
Tanzania is the EAC partner state that has NOT waived work permit fees for East African citizens; it reduced its fee for them instead. The concessions elsewhere in the bloc are also narrower than the phrase 'EAC waiver' suggests — Uganda, for instance, exempts Kenyan and Rwandan nationals from immigration fees but charges Tanzanians USD 1,550 a year, which is reciprocity rather than free movement. A Kenyan colleague's experience of moving to Kampala does not predict yours moving to Dar, in either direction.
Zanzibar administers its own immigration. If the role is based on Unguja or Pemba, the filing goes through the Zanzibar immigration office — and through ZIPA if the employer holds a Zanzibar investment incentive certificate. Dar es Salaam itself is mainland and unaffected.
Tanzania has no digital nomad or remote-work permit. There is no class that lets you live in Dar and work for a foreign employer, and no announced programme to write into your plans.

Worth knowing

There are two different capital numbers in circulation and they answer different questions. The Tanzania Investment Act 2022 and its 2023 regulations set a minimum investment capital of USD 500,000 for a foreign investor to register a project with the Tanzania Investment Centre and receive a certificate of incentives. That is the incentives threshold, not the immigration threshold. Immigration assesses capital for the permit separately — ask which number your adviser is quoting.
The 2022 Investment Act removed the fixed cap on how many work and residence permits a registered investor may obtain, which materially changed staffing plans for foreign-owned companies. Older guidance quoting a five-permit quota is out of date.
The investment has to be demonstrably in Tanzania and productive. A bank balance is not an investment for these purposes and renewal is where that gets tested.
For an investment on Zanzibar, the application is lodged through ZIPA and the Zanzibar immigration office rather than the mainland department, and Zanzibar's own thresholds and incentive schemes apply.

Worth knowing

Labour Class B is NOT the general employee class. It is a narrow list — health professionals, oil and gas, and science and maths teaching. Most expatriate professionals are Labour Class C, while simultaneously being Immigration Class B. Two systems, same letters, different meanings.
The Act is built around succession: the employer is expected to show why a Tanzanian could not do the job and, on renewal, what has been done to train a local successor. Renewals get harder, not easier, if nothing has changed.
The Labour Commissioner issues work permits for Zanzibar as well as the mainland, even though Zanzibar's residence permitting is separate. So the split is not clean and it catches people out in both directions.

Worth knowing

This class carries no work rights of any kind, including for foreign clients. It is a genuine retirement permit, not a soft nomad route.
Missionaries and NGO volunteers sit in immigration Class C but may still need a Labour Class D work permit if they are engaged by a religious or charitable organisation — the exemption from the work-permit-first rule covers retirees and students, not everyone in Class C.
Zanzibar has marketed its own residence schemes to property buyers and retirees on distinctly different terms. Those are Zanzibar instruments and do not give you mainland residence.

How long it lasts: Endorsed to the principal's permit and renewed with it.
Path to permanent residence: Marriage to a Tanzanian citizen opens naturalisation, but Tanzania does not permit dual citizenship — acquiring Tanzanian nationality means renouncing your existing one. This is the single biggest difference from Kenya next door, which does allow it.
Cost: A per-dependant fee on top of the principal's permit — commonly quoted around USD 500 per dependant under 18 for Class A and B principals; confirm on the current schedule.

Worth knowing

A dependant endorsement carries no work rights. A working spouse needs their own work permit and residence permit.
The no-dual-citizenship rule is genuinely decisive for mixed families and is frequently missed by people who assume the East African norm. Check it before starting any naturalisation.
