What is Slovakia's Temporary residence for employment (single permit)?

The default route for a third-country national with a Slovak job offer. One document covers residence and work, and it is tied to a named employer, position and place of work — a change to any of the three is a new application, not a notification. It lasts granted for the expected duration of the employment, up to 2 years on a single permit (up to 5 years for graduates of Slovak secondary schools and universities). Renewable, repeatedly. Temporary residence for employment (single permit)

What you need

A job offer from a Slovak employer for a specific position and workplace
A consenting 'confirmation of the possibility to fill a vacancy' (potvrdenie o možnosti obsadenia voľného pracovného miesta) issued by the Labour Office — the employer reports the vacancy, then applies; the office has 15 business days to decide
The residence application must be filed within 180 days of that confirmation being issued
Criminal record certificate from your country of citizenship and anywhere you lived over 90 days in any six consecutive months in the last three years, apostilled and no older than 90 days
Proof of accommodation for at least six months — a notarised owner's affidavit, a notarised tenancy agreement, an electronic consent, or a hotel/dormitory confirmation

How long it lasts: Granted for the expected duration of the employment, up to 2 years on a single permit (up to 5 years for graduates of Slovak secondary schools and universities). Renewable, repeatedly.
Path to permanent residence: Five years of continuous legal residence gives EU long-term residence (dlhodobý pobyt), which since 15 July 2026 requires a Slovak language exam at CEFR A2 or above, sat at a language school or a public university. Permanent residence for five years is separately available immediately to spouses and direct relatives of Slovak citizens, and becomes unlimited after four years of holding it.
Cost: €250 administrative fee, plus €10 for the residence card (or €39 for issue within two working days). The Labour Office confirmation is free to the applicant; the employer bears the reporting.
Processing time: 60 days from a complete application for a single permit — but 30 days for shortage occupations, shared business-service centres, technology centres, significant foreign investors and OECD nationals working for a foreign investor, and 90 days for graduates of Slovak schools.

Worth knowing

Filing a complete application at the Foreign Police already lets you stay legally until it is decided, and on a single permit it lets you START WORKING. That is unusually generous and is the main practical advantage over the neighbouring systems.
From 15 July 2026 you must notify the Foreign Police of the start and the end of any period of unemployment within seven working days. Miss that and you lose the protection period that otherwise keeps your residence alive — three months if you have held the permit under two years, six months if over two.
You must be physically in Slovakia for more than half of the granted residence period in each calendar year, and must notify the Foreign Police in writing before any continuous absence over 180 days.
After arrival there are three separate clocks: report the start of your stay within three working days of entry, sign up for health insurance within three working days of collecting the residence card, and file a medical report within 30 days of collecting it.
The single permit is not portable. Moving employer, position or workplace means a fresh Labour Office confirmation and a fresh application.

A university degree — or, for ICT managers and specialists only, higher professional skills in place of a degree
An employment contract for at least six months in a role matching that qualification
Gross salary of at least 1.2× the average wage in the Slovak economy. On the Statistical Office's 2025 average of €1,620 a month that is roughly €1,944; confirm the reference figure the Foreign Police is applying on your filing date
Only 1.0× the average wage — roughly €1,620 — if you obtained your university degree within the last three years
A Labour Office confirmation of the possibility to fill a highly-qualified vacancy, with the application filed within 180 days of it
Criminal record certificate and proof of accommodation, both no older than 90 days

How long it lasts: Five years, or the validity of the Labour Office confirmation plus 90 days where that is shorter. Renewable.
Path to permanent residence: Counts toward the five years for EU long-term residence, with the same A2 Slovak language exam at the end. Blue Card holders also get the directive's intra-EU mobility, which single-permit holders do not.
Cost: €250 administrative fee plus €10 for the residence card (€39 for two working days).
Processing time: 30 days from a complete application — half the single permit's 60, and the single strongest argument for taking this route where you qualify.

Worth knowing

The 1.2× multiple is the post-recast figure. Anything quoting a 1.5× Slovak Blue Card threshold is out of date and overstates the bar by about €400 a month.
The recent-graduate concession drops the test to the plain average wage, which puts a great many ordinary Bratislava tech and shared-services salaries inside the Blue Card rather than the single permit. Check the graduation date before assuming you do not qualify.
You can file at any Foreign Police department if you are already legally in Slovakia — you do not have to go home to an embassy first.
The salary reference moves with the Statistical Office's published average wage, which rose 6.3% in 2025. Treat any euro figure, including the ones above, as this year's only.
Not available to asylum seekers, temporary-protection holders, research-and-development applicants, posted workers, or holders of long-term residence in another member state applying for economic activity here.

Temporary residence for business (živnostenský list)

Freelancers and sole traders working on a Slovak trade licence, and executives of Slovak companies. Genuinely available, and genuinely the most demanding of the routes here — the funds tests are the highest and the compliance load is continuous.

What you need

A Slovak trade licence — €7 for an unregulated trade, €22 for a regulated or craft trade, issued by the Trade Licensing Office within three working days — or a registered company with you as its executive
Proof of personal funds at the subsistence minimum for each month of the stay, and for a stay over a year, 12× the subsistence minimum (about €3,543 at the €295.22 rate from 1 July 2026)
Proof of separate business funds at 20× the subsistence minimum (about €5,904), in a distinct business account — it cannot be the same account used for the personal test
Proof of accommodation for at least six months and a criminal record certificate, both no older than 90 days
A business plan, where one is required for the activity

How long it lasts: Up to 3 years, renewable.
Path to permanent residence: Counts toward the five years for EU long-term residence, subject to the A2 Slovak exam.
Cost: €330 if the application is filed at the Foreign Police, €350 at a Slovak embassy abroad, plus €10 for the residence card. Ongoing minimum social and health contributions are the real cost.
Processing time: Statutory 90 days.

Worth knowing

Since 1 July 2025 an application to be GRANTED this residence can only be lodged at a Slovak embassy abroad. There is no in-country route and no territorial exception. Renewals are still filed at the Foreign Police.
You also cannot switch INTO the business purpose at the Foreign Police until 24 months after your current residence was granted. Together with the point above, this route is now something you plan into from abroad, not something you fall back on.
From 15 July 2026 arrears to the tax office, the customs office, Sociálna poisťovňa or a health insurer are grounds to cancel the residence — and they count across every company you are an officer of, not just your own trade. Only debts falling due from 15 July 2026 onward trigger the procedure.
At renewal you must show taxable income from the business above half the annual non-taxable allowance for the previous tax period — a real trading test, not a formality.
Renewal as a company executive also requires proof that the company paid at least the statutory minimum corporate tax for the previous period — €340 to €11,520 depending on turnover.
Slovakia has no digital nomad or remote-work visa. If you work remotely for a foreign client, this trade-licence route is the only self-employment door, and it expects you to be trading in Slovakia rather than merely living here.

Temporary residence as a Slovak Living Abroad

Evidence of Slovak national consciousness, which is a distinct test from the ancestry one and where most applications actually stall; the supporting document must be under six months old
For the residence application itself: a valid passport and the certificate

How long it lasts: Up to 5 years, renewable repeatedly.
Path to permanent residence: Counts toward the five years for EU long-term residence. Holders of the certificate also have a shortened path to Slovak citizenship compared with ordinary applicants.
Cost: No administrative fee for the residence itself — only €10 for the residence card (€39 for two working days). The certificate is applied for separately at the Office or a Slovak embassy.
Processing time: 30 days from a complete application to the Foreign Police.

Worth knowing

The holder can be employed with NO further permit, can do business and can study. No Labour Office confirmation, no employer tie, no vacancy report — which is the whole point of the route.
Apply for the residence within 60 days of the certificate being issued and the criminal record certificate is waived entirely.
The bottleneck is the certificate, not the residence. Budget your time at the Office for Slovaks Living Abroad and on assembling the ancestry documents, which for pre-1918 records may mean parish registers rather than civil ones.
There is no legal entitlement to be granted temporary residence on this basis; the certificate opens the door, it does not guarantee it.

Proof of sufficient funds for the stay
Proof of accommodation and a criminal record certificate

How long it lasts: The expected duration of the study, up to a maximum of six years; renewable.
Path to permanent residence: Study time counts toward EU long-term residence at half rate, so a degree alone will not get you there. Graduates of Slovak schools do, however, get a materially better deal on the employment route: a five-year permit rather than two, and no Labour Office vacancy step.
Cost: Administrative fee plus €10 for the residence card. Slovak-taught programmes at public universities are free; foreign-language programmes charge tuition.
Processing time: 90 days from a complete application, as restated in the 15 July 2026 amendment.

Worth knowing

'Free tuition' means free in Slovak. English-taught programmes at the same public universities charge, and the distinction is the entire financial picture.
The graduate concession is the reason this route is worth more than it looks: finishing a Slovak degree removes the vacancy-reporting step that is the slowest part of every other work route.

Temporary residence for family reunion

Spouses and dependent children of Slovak citizens and of third-country nationals already holding residence here, and dependent parents in defined cases.

What you need

Evidence of the family relationship, apostilled and officially translated into Slovak
Proof that the sponsor can support the family member, and proof of accommodation
A criminal record certificate for applicants over 14

How long it lasts: Granted for the validity of the sponsor's residence, up to a maximum of 5 years. Renewable, repeatedly.
Path to permanent residence: A spouse or direct relative of a Slovak citizen with permanent residence can be granted permanent residence for five years straight away, which becomes unlimited after four years of holding it — a much shorter road than the general five-year long-term residence.
Cost: Administrative fee plus €10 for the residence card.
Processing time: 90 days from a complete application — but 30 days for the spouse or minor child of a Blue Card holder if both applications are filed together, or of a sponsor working for a significant foreign investor, a shared business-service centre or a technology centre.

Worth knowing

Filing alongside a Blue Card holder cuts the wait from 90 days to 30. Families who file sequentially rather than together give that up for nothing.
Since 15 July 2026, a family member joining a sponsor who holds research-and-development residence no longer has to produce an accommodation document.
Also since 15 July 2026, an application for a child born in Slovakia or in another member state no longer needs proof of financial means or a medical report — the law caught up with the practice.
Documents issued abroad need an apostille or consular legalisation and a translation by a translator on the Ministry of Justice register; a translation done abroad needs a Slovak mission's confirmation unless it was done in Czechia.
