Before you start
- A valid photo ID — a passport satisfies the BCEAO's 2025 KYC instruction on its own
- Proof of address under three months old: a CIE or SODECI bill, a certificat de résidence, or a lease plus a landlord's attestation
- Two identical passport photos, which is a bank requirement rather than a legal one and the commonest same-day blocker
- A recent payslip and certificat de travail if you want salary domiciliation
Step-by-step

Open a mobile-money wallet first
Orange Money, MTN MoMo, Moov Money and Wave all open in minutes on a passport, and in a town with few branches they are how most people actually move money. Until you verify in person you are capped at XOF 200,000 a month; verified, you can hold XOF 2,000,000 and top up XOF 10,000,000 a month. Wallets from the same issuer share those ceilings.

Open the bank account inside your first three months
Société Générale's published rule accepts, from non-ECOWAS foreigners, a passport with an entry stamp less than three months old OR residency documents for a longer stay. Because your carte de résident means an Abidjan trip you may not make quickly, using the passport window is the single best banking decision available to you. Société Générale and Ecobank both have a presence here.

Domicile your salary and the deposit disappears
Salary domiciliation is one of the nineteen legally free services, and it waives Société Générale's minimum deposit. It also proves the regular income the union's droit au compte depends on, and — since the BCEAO's April 2026 note on foreigners who acquire resident status — your payslips are the instrument that authorises moving income out of the CFA zone at all.

Know the nineteen free services and cite them
BCEAO Instruction n° 004-06-2014 makes nineteen services free with no conditions attached — its Article 2 says exactly that. Account opening and closure, monthly statements, salary domiciliation, deposits and withdrawals at your own bank, card payments anywhere in the union, and receiving transfers are all on the list. In a small branch, quoting the instruction number is more effective than arguing.

Documents you’ll need
- Passport, ideally with an entry stamp under three months old
- Proof of address under three months old — CIE or SODECI bill, certificat de résidence, or lease plus landlord attestation
- Two identical passport photos
- Recent payslip and certificat de travail
Things most newcomers don’t know
The three-month passport window matters more here than in Abidjan.
Everywhere in the country you can open on a passport plus a fresh entry stamp before banks start demanding residency papers. In Yamoussoukro your resident card is gated behind a 236 km trip to an ONECI counter that shuts at noon, so that window is realistically the difference between banking in month one and banking in month four.

Three refusals and the BCEAO can order a bank to open an account.
Article 8 of UEMOA Règlement n° 15/2002 gives anyone established in a member state with a regular income the right to an account, with an income floor of XOF 50,000 a month. In a town with few branches, three refusals is not a hypothetical — and almost nobody knows this remedy exists.

A bounced cheque bans you across eight countries for five years.
Cheque incidents go into the CIP-UEMOA register at the BCEAO, and banks must consult it before issuing a chequebook. An old incident from a posting in Bamako or Dakar will follow you into a Yamoussoukro branch. Use cards and transfers.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting for the resident card before trying to open, and losing the passport window to an Abidjan trip you keep postponing
- Bringing an address document more than three months old
- Turning up without two passport photos — with fewer branches, a wasted trip costs more here
- Paying for any of the nineteen services the BCEAO made unconditionally free
- Assuming a wallet balance is a bank account: the regulatory ceiling is XOF 2,000,000 and it is shared across wallets from the same issuer
