Before you start
- An SSN or ITIN
- Form W-4 with your employer for federal withholding
- Kansas Form K-4 with your employer for state withholding
- Records of foreign income and foreign financial accounts
Step-by-step

Complete the federal W-4 and Kansas Form K-4 on day one
Kansas has its own withholding allowance certificate separate from the federal W-4, and its allowance rules differ enough that copying your federal figures across produces the wrong withholding. There is no additional city or county form, because no Kansas municipality levies an income tax — a genuinely simpler payroll setup than Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky or Missouri.

Work out your actual effective rate, not the top one
K.S.A. 79-32,110 sets 5.20% up to USD 23,000 of taxable income for a single filer and 5.58% above it, USD 46,000 for a couple. Because the low rate starts at the first dollar, a modest Kansas salary carries a higher effective state rate than the same salary in a state with a graduated ladder — even where that state's headline top rate is higher. Run your own number rather than comparing top rates.

Compute the property tax before you shop for a house
Article 11 of the Kansas Constitution assesses residential real property at 11.5% of market value, commercial at 25% and most other categories at 30%. The City of Wichita publishes the combined levy at about 111 mills across the city, Sedgwick County, USD 259 and Wichita State University. Multiply market value by 0.115, then by 0.111, and you have the annual bill — around USD 3,200 on a USD 250,000 house before any exemption.

Claim the residential exemption from the statewide school levy
Kansas exempts the first USD 75,000 of a home's appraised value from the 20-mill statewide school finance levy. It is modest in absolute terms but it is real money every year, and it applies to your primary residence. Check that it is showing on your bill rather than assuming the county applied it.

Remember the annual motor vehicle tax when budgeting
Kansas taxes every registered vehicle each year under K.S.A. 79-5105, billed with the registration renewal and calculated against the county average tax rate. It is one of the recurring costs a newcomer from a state without it consistently forgets, and it is computed on the county you live in rather than the city.

Determine your US tax residency and check for a treaty
The substantial presence test counts weighted days across three years to decide whether the US taxes your worldwide income or only US-source income; your visa category does not settle it. Certain students and scholars are exempt from counting days for a period, which matters at Wichita State. The Kansas return begins from federal adjusted gross income, so a federal treaty exclusion generally flows through to the state.

Things most newcomers don’t know
Kansas's bottom rate is 5.20%, and that is the number nobody quotes.
The 2024 special session collapsed three brackets into two, and the statute reads 5.20% on the first USD 23,000 of taxable income for a single filer, 5.58% above. There is no 2% or 3% starting band the way there is in most graduated states. A salary of USD 60,000 therefore carries a heavier effective Kansas rate than a top-rate comparison against a state like Missouri or New York would suggest — and the standard deduction is small, so more of your income is taxable in the first place.

No Kansas city or county may levy an income tax, and that is rare for this region.
Kansas City, Missouri runs a 1% earnings tax on people who live OR work there. Ohio's municipalities tax where you work. Indiana's counties tax where you live. Kentucky's cities and counties levy occupational fees. Kansas has none of it: one state return and no municipal one. For anyone comparing Wichita against a Midwestern peer, this is a real structural advantage that never appears in a top-rate table.

The state sales tax on food is 0% — but the local sales tax on food is not.
Kansas completed the phase-out of its state sales tax on groceries on 1 January 2025, which was a large and genuinely unusual reform. It did not abolish local sales tax on food, so a Wichita grocery bill still carries the city and Sedgwick County rate on top of a 0% state rate. Read that as a real saving rather than a complete exemption, and do not expect an untaxed till receipt.

Wichita State University levies its own property tax, which almost no US university does.
The City of Wichita's published mill levy table lists WSU at about 1.5 mills alongside the city, the county and the school district. It is a direct legacy of the institution having been the Municipal University of Wichita until it joined the state system in 1964, and it means Sedgwick County property owners fund a state university through their tax bill. It is small money and a genuinely unusual line item.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing Kansas's 5.58% top rate against another state's without noticing that the 5.20% rate starts at the first dollar.
- Assuming a city or county income tax exists because the neighbouring states have one — Kansas allows none.
- Reading 'Kansas abolished the food sales tax' as meaning groceries are untaxed; the local rate still applies.
- Budgeting a Wichita house on price alone without applying the 11.5% assessment ratio and the ~111-mill levy.
- Forgetting the annual motor vehicle tax, which is billed with the registration and recurs for the life of the car.
