Williams Companies (headquartered here), ONEOK (headquartered here), ONE Gas, Helmerich & Payne, NGL Energy Partners, a deep engineering and services layer
Tulsa's claim was once 'Oil Capital of the World' and the modern reality is midstream: Williams and ONEOK are both S&P 500 pipeline companies headquartered in downtown towers, and between them they move a very large share of America's natural gas. This is a corporate-headquarters economy rather than a field economy — engineering, commercial, trading, legal and finance roles rather than rigs — and it is the main reason downtown Tulsa has the skyline it does.
Aviation & aerospace
American Airlines Tulsa Tech Ops, Spirit AeroSystems Tulsa, NORDAM, Tulsa International Airport, a supplier base around the airport
American Airlines' Tulsa maintenance base is one of the largest commercial aircraft maintenance and engineering operations in the world and has been the city's anchor industrial employer for generations. NORDAM is a Tulsa-headquartered aerostructures manufacturer. The cluster hires mechanics, engineers, planners and supply-chain staff continuously, and unlike Oklahoma City's Tinker Air Force Base most of it is commercial rather than defence, so citizenship is not the blanket barrier it is there.
Banking & finance
BOK Financial (headquartered here), Bank of Oklahoma, a substantial trust and wealth-management layer, the George Kaiser Family Foundation
BOK Financial is one of the larger regional banking groups in the United States and is headquartered in the tower that dominates the Tulsa skyline. The George Kaiser Family Foundation is unusually consequential for a city this size — it funded the Gathering Place, backs Tulsa Remote, and drives a great deal of the early-childhood and civic investment here. That concentration of philanthropic capital is a genuine differentiator.
Health care
Saint Francis Health System, Ascension St. John, Hillcrest HealthCare System, OSU Center for Health Sciences and OSU Medicine, the University of Tulsa
Saint Francis operates one of the largest hospital campuses in the country by bed count on a single site in south Tulsa. Oklahoma State University's medical school and Center for Health Sciences are here rather than in Stillwater, giving Tulsa a teaching-hospital layer. Oklahoma has a genuine primary-care shortage, so clinical recruitment is active and the sector is one of the more accessible to newcomers.
Technology & remote work
Tulsa Remote's members, Holberton and Atlas School, the Greenwood Initiative and 36 Degrees North, Tulsa Innovation Labs, Cyber Skills Center
This is the deliberately built one. Tulsa Remote's four-thousand-plus arrivals since 2018 created a remote-worker community large enough to have its own institutions, and Tulsa Innovation Labs has pushed public and philanthropic money into cyber, drones and energy tech. It is not a large employer base in the way the energy majors are — most of these people work for companies elsewhere — but it is the reason a newcomer here finds a professional network faster than the city's size predicts.
Manufacturing & logistics
Tulsa Port of Catoosa, Whirlpool, Zeeco, Melton Truck Lines, a dense fabrication and process-equipment sector
The Tulsa Port of Catoosa is one of the furthest-inland river ports in the United States, connected to the Mississippi and the Gulf by the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System — barge traffic from Oklahoma to the sea, which almost nobody expects. Around it sits a serious metal fabrication and process-equipment cluster, much of it serving the energy industry.
