The dos and don’ts that help you fit in fast — and avoid the mistakes newcomers make in their first weeks.

What to know before you go

The aerospace job market is two markets, and only one of them is open to you

Critical

Airbus commercial programmes, ATR and their supply chain hire internationally and in English. Defence, space and strategic work — Airbus Defence and Space, Thales Alenia Space, ONERA, parts of CNES — routinely require a French security clearance, which in practice is difficult or impossible without French or EU nationality and long residence. Job titles look identical from outside. Before you accept that a Toulouse aerospace career is straightforwardly open, check whether the specific post is on a cleared programme, because that single question decides whether the offer can actually be made.

Toulouse has no rent cap, and it is not on the list of places that do

Critical

Paris, Lille with Hellemmes and Lomme, Lyon and Villeurbanne, Bordeaux, Montpellier, Grenoble, the Pays Basque agglomeration and two Seine-Saint-Denis groupings apply encadrement des loyers, which caps what a landlord may charge. Toulouse is not among them and has not joined the experiment — putting the métropole forward is a recurring local political proposal rather than something that has happened, and the national experiment's current authorisation runs only to 25 November 2026 in any case. Local observatory data show a market under real pressure on small flats rather than a runaway one. What matters practically is that the reference-rent protection you may have read about in a French renting guide does not exist here, and your only real leverage is the strength of your dossier and how early you start.

Apply for Visale before you view a single flat

Critical

French landlords expect a garant — a French person earning several times the rent who accepts liability for it. Newcomers have no such person, which is why renting in France looks impossible on paper. Visale, run by Action Logement, is a free state-backed guarantee covering most people under 31 and most new employees of any age within a window of starting a job. The certificate is issued online in days. In a market without a rent cap and with more applicants than flats, arriving with one is the difference between being screened out and being considered.

Home insurance is a legal obligation for tenants and the agent will stop the handover without it

Critical

French law requires a tenant to hold assurance habitation and to produce the attestation at the key handover and annually after that. A landlord may take out a policy on your behalf and bill you, and may ultimately end the lease. It costs very little and can be arranged online in an hour — but not on the morning of the handover, which is how people lose a day and a moving van.

Toulouse is the largest French city with no high-speed line to Paris

Important

Paris is around four and a quarter hours by train, because the TGV runs on classic track south of Bordeaux. The Bordeaux–Toulouse high-speed line is under construction and not expected to open before the early 2030s. The practical consequence is that Toulouse runs on its airport in a way Lyon and Bordeaux do not — Blagnac has an unusually dense domestic and European schedule — and that a weekly Paris commute is a flight, not a train.

The metro is being extended and the works are a fact of daily life until 2028

Good to know

Tisséo is building a third metro line, line C, alongside an extension of line B, with tunnelling running through the late 2020s and an opening targeted for the end of 2028 that has already drawn public argument about slippage. Streets are closed, bus routes are diverted and some addresses that look well connected on a map are next to a construction site. Before signing a lease, look up where the works are rather than where the finished line will be.
