Jobs in Touba

The sectors hiring, the employers to know, and how work really runs here.

Toubaruns on a handful of strong industries. If you’re job-hunting or weighing a move, here’s where the opportunities (and the big-name employers) are.

Top industries & employers

Religious economy & the Magal

Comité d'organisation du Grand Magal, the dahiras, Mouride foundations

The single largest economic engine in the city and the reason for most of its infrastructure. Feeding, housing and transporting millions of pilgrims for one weekend is an annual logistics operation run largely by voluntary associations rather than by firms.

Wholesale trade & markets

Marché Ocass and the surrounding wholesale trade

Touba is one of West Africa's great trading towns, and its merchants operate networks that run through Dakar to Europe, the Gulf and the United States. Much of it is informal by design, which is why the city's real economic weight is understated in national statistics.

Diaspora remittances & construction

Modou-Modou networks in Italy, Spain, France and the US; local builders

A large share of Touba's housing is built with money earned abroad and owned by people who are not resident. That shapes the rental market, the construction cycle and who you actually negotiate with.

Health

Centre Hospitalier National Matlaboul Fawzeyni, Hôpital Cheikh Ahmadoul Khadim

Unusually for a non-capital, Touba has two level-3 hospitals. Matlaboul Fawzeyni grew out of a dahira initiative in 1994 when the city had only the Ndamatou health centre; Cheikh Ahmadoul Khadim, 300 beds on ten hectares, was inaugurated on 18 September 2021.

Transport & haulage

Long-distance bus and lorry operators along the A2 Ila Touba corridor

The 113 km Ila Touba motorway from Thiès via Diourbel opened on 20 December 2018 and put the city within a straightforward drive of Dakar. Haulage and passenger transport are a substantial local employer, and the road's business case was the pilgrimage.

Agriculture in the Baol

Groundnut and millet smallholders, Khelcom and the brotherhood's farms

Touba sits in the Baol, historically groundnut country, and the brotherhood's own large-scale farming is part of the Mouride economy rather than separate from it. Rainfall is the constraint on all of it.
