The Thiès rail workshops and the operators along the Dakar and Touba corridors
The Dakar–Saint-Louis line reached here in 1885 and the Dakar–Niger line made it a junction between 1906 and 1923, with the workshops arriving in 1923 and the network's headquarters in 1934. Rail is diminished from its peak but the city's position at the junction of the coastal and eastern corridors is unchanged.
Phosphates & chemicals
Industries Chimiques du Sénégal, the Taïba and Pallo phosphate mines
The phosphate deposits north of the city are one of Senegal's oldest industrial assets and feed fertiliser production. It is heavy industry with a long-running governance debate attached, and it is the largest private employer in the region.
Tapestry, crafts & design
Manufactures Sénégalaises des Arts Décoratifs and the artisan village
Founded in 1966 at Senghor's initiative and marking sixty years in 2026, the MSAD weaves Senegalese painting into large tapestries in the Aubusson technique, priced by the square metre in the hundreds of thousands of CFA francs. Around it sits a genuine crafts economy — sculptors, cabinetmakers, weavers.
Higher education
Université Iba Der Thiam de Thiès, École polytechnique de Thiès
The polytechnic dates from 1973 and the university opened in 2007, giving the city an engineering and agronomy base that its size would not otherwise support and a student population that turns the local economy every October.
Horticulture & agri-processing
Niayes market gardeners, packers and exporters along the coastal belt
The Niayes — the strip of shallow depressions between Dakar and Saint-Louis — is Senegal's vegetable basket, and Thiès is its inland market town. Green beans, onions and mangoes for European supermarkets move through here.
The airport corridor
Blaise Diagne International at Diass, the surrounding logistics and industrial platform
The airport is in the Thiès region and about half an hour by road from the city, with an industrial and logistics zone growing around it. It is the single biggest change to Thiès's economic geography in a generation.
