Check which list your issuing country is on
Recognised countries and jurisdictions (including the UK, USA, New Zealand and Canada) allow you to convert without a knowledge or driving test. Countries formerly covered by Experienced Driver Recognition now require both tests.

Book a Service NSW centre appointment
Licence conversion is done in person at a Service NSW centre — it cannot be completed entirely online. Appointments in inner-Sydney centres book out; suburban centres are usually far quicker.

Pass the tests, if your country requires them
The Driver Knowledge Test is a computer-based road-rules test taken at a Service NSW centre. The practical driving test is booked separately and demand is high, so allow weeks rather than days.

Attend with your documents and pass the eyesight check
Bring your overseas licence, translation if needed, identity documents and proof of address. A vision screening is done at the counter.

Surrender the overseas licence and receive the NSW one
You generally hand over the foreign licence when converting. A temporary paper licence is issued and the card arrives by post.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The 1 February 2026 change is the single most important fact in this process.

Experienced Driver Status from 'List B' jurisdictions ceased to operate in NSW on that date. Drivers who previously would have converted straight over must now pass both the Driver Knowledge Test and a practical driving test. Almost every guide written before 2026 gets this wrong.

The 3-month clock starts when you become a resident, not when you land.

If you're still a temporary visitor you can keep using your overseas licence, but once you're residing in NSW the clock runs — and driving unlicensed after it expires is a serious offence, not a paperwork slip.

Test slots in the Sydney metro area are the bottleneck, not your driving. If your country is on the test-required list, book the moment you're eligible and treat the lesson schedule as fitting around the slot you got.

Common mistakes to avoid

Relying on pre-2026 advice that your country grants Experienced Driver Status — that recognition ceased on 1 February 2026 for List B jurisdictions.
Letting the 3-month residency window lapse while waiting for a driving test booking.
Bringing an informal translation — NSW expects an accredited one.
Assuming an International Driving Permit extends your right to drive as a resident. It doesn't; it only accompanies a valid foreign licence for visitors.
