Employer secures the work permit and entry permit
The employer applies through MoHRE for the labour approval and through the federal ICP for the employment entry permit. Free-zone employers do the same through their zone's establishment card. The entry permit starts the 60-day clock.

Activate the permit — usually without leaving the country
If you are already inside the UAE on a visit or other status, an in-country change of status is filed so you never need to fly out. The old 'visa run' is no longer the default. Confirm this before booking anything.

Take the medical fitness test
Mandatory for all residents aged 18 and over: a blood test and a chest X-ray for tuberculosis, done at an approved Sharjah screening centre. An active communicable disease can mean refusal. Results generally come back within a day or two and feed straight into the visa file.

Give Emirates ID biometrics at an ICP centre
Fingerprints, a facial scan and an official photograph, at an ICP-approved centre. The residency file cannot complete until biometrics are captured, and adults must attend in person.

Residence visa issued digitally and linked to your Emirates ID
ICP issues the residence file electronically — no sticker in the passport. Download the digital residence permit from the UAEICP app. MoHRE then activates the work permit so you can legally start work. Note the Emirates ID number the moment it is generated: banks and telecoms can often start on the number before the plastic card arrives.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Sharjah runs on federal ICP — not Dubai's GDRFA, not Abu Dhabi's TAMM.

Nearly every UAE relocation guide online is a Dubai guide, and Dubai is the outlier: it has its own immigration authority and is the only emirate that still puts a sticker in the passport. Following Dubai instructions in Sharjah sends you to the wrong portal and the wrong counter. Check that any procedure you read names ICP before you act on it.

The employer does the work but the 60-day clock is your liability.

Your active duties are only the medical and the biometrics — the PRO handles everything else. Yet the 60-day completion window runs from your entry, and overstay fines accrue against the applicant, not the company. If the PRO is slow, that is still your problem. Track each stage and start chasing well before day sixty.

Get the Emirates ID number before the card, and start banking with it.

The plastic card takes time to print and post, but the number exists in the system as soon as the application is approved. Banks and telecoms can frequently begin onboarding on the number alone. Newcomers sit idle for a week or two waiting for a card when they could have opened an account.

Free-zone and university employment are separate lanes with separate sponsors.

Hamriyah, SAIF Zone, SPC and Shams sponsor through their own establishment cards rather than through MoHRE, and University City institutions sponsor academic staff directly. The documents, the timelines and who you chase all differ. Establish which entity is actually your sponsor before you start reading procedures, because half of them will not apply to you.

Common mistakes to avoid

Following Dubai's GDRFA or Ejari-based instructions in Sharjah, where they have no application.
Assuming you must fly out to activate a permit — an in-country change of status is now standard for most applicants.
Treating the medical fitness test as a formality and shipping belongings or signing a lease before you have passed it.
Missing the 60-day completion window because the employer's PRO stalled — the fines land on you.
Expecting a visa sticker in your passport and being unable to prove residency to a landlord or an overseas official. Show the Emirates ID or the digital permit from the UAEICP app.
