Things to do in Sharjah

Where locals actually go — culture, neighbourhoods, nature and a few hidden gems.

Editor's picks

A local's shortlist — the places worth your time first, each with a tip.

Heart of Sharjah

Culture · Old town, by the creek

The largest heritage restoration project in the region — coral-and-gypsum courtyard houses, wind towers, museums and the Souq Al Arsah returned to their 1950s state.

Local tip: Go late afternoon when the light hits the coral walls and the day's heat drops. The Souq Al Arsah coffee shop inside is one of the oldest in the country and almost nobody visiting Dubai ever finds it.

Al Majaz Waterfront & Al Noor Island

Nature · Khalid Lagoon

A landscaped lagoon-side promenade with the Sharjah fountain, connected by footbridge to an island of sculpture, butterfly house and walkways.

Local tip: This is where Sharjah families actually spend their evenings. Come after dark in summer — the lagoon breeze makes it bearable when the rest of the day is not.

Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization

Culture · Corniche, in the restored souq building

A serious collection of Islamic art, science and manuscripts housed in a converted 1980s souq under a golden dome.

Local tip: The astronomy and navigation gallery is the standout and takes about an hour. Pair it with the Sharjah Art Foundation spaces in the old town for a genuinely full cultural day.

The Central Souq (Blue Souq)

Landmark · Al Majaz, beside the lagoon

Two blue-tiled barrel-vaulted halls of gold, carpets, antiques and curiosities — the emirate's most recognisable building.

Local tip: The upper floor is where the carpets and old silver are, and prices there are a starting position rather than a price. Come with time and no fixed plan.

Khorfakkan & the east coast

Hidden gem

Nature · Gulf of Oman, ~1.5 hours by road

Sharjah's territory on the Indian Ocean side of the peninsula: a horseshoe bay, a mountain amphitheatre, a waterfall and clear diving water.

Local tip: The road tunnels straight through the Hajar mountains, which is a drive worth doing in itself. Almost no one living in Dubai realises Sharjah has a second coastline, which is exactly why it is worth the trip.

Mleiha Archaeological Centre

Hidden gem

Landmark · Central desert, ~50 minutes inland

Bronze Age tombs, a pre-Islamic fort and evidence of some of the earliest human presence outside Africa, set among red dunes and the Fossil Rock outcrop.

Local tip: Book a dawn or dusk tour rather than midday. The site is genuinely significant archaeologically and is presented properly, and the desert around it is where Sharjah residents go camping in winter.
