The dominant sector and the one that sets the housing market. The city passed its 500th anniversary in 2025 and the July 2026 Fiesta del Mar alone drew more than 117,000 visitors with hotel occupancy peaking near 78%.

Colombia's deepest natural Caribbean port, which is why it needs no permanent dredging campaign the way Barranquilla's river channel does. Imports rose 12% and exports 17% in the first half of 2026 against the same period a year earlier.
