Rotterdamruns on a handful of strong industries. If you’re job-hunting or weighing a move, here’s where the opportunities (and the big-name employers) are.
Top industries & employers
Port, shipping & maritime logistics
Port of Rotterdam Authority, Hutchison Ports ECT, Boskalis, Van Oord, Kotug, Broekman
Europe's largest port by tonnage, running 40 km from the city out to Maasvlakte 2 — land reclaimed from the North Sea. Maritime services, dredging and offshore engineering cluster around it.
Energy, chemicals & refining
Shell Pernis, BP Rotterdam, LyondellBasell, Air Liquide, Porthos
The Pernis complex is the largest refinery in Europe, and the Porthos project pipes captured CO2 into depleted North Sea gas fields — which has turned the port into one of the continent's biggest energy-transition employers.
Medical & life sciences
Erasmus MC, Sophia Children's Hospital, Maasstad Ziekenhuis, Franciscus Gasthuis
Erasmus MC is the largest university medical centre in the Netherlands and one of Europe's most-cited biomedical research institutions, with the Rotterdam Study cohort running since 1990.
Trading, tank storage & asset management
Vopak, Robeco, Unilever Rotterdam, Coolblue, Vitol operations
Vopak is the world's largest independent tank storage operator and was founded here; Robeco has managed money from Rotterdam since 1929. Commodity trade and the port's storage capacity are the same business.
Architecture, design & the creative sector
OMA, MVRDV, Neutelings Riedijk, Mecanoo, Het Nieuwe Instituut
The blank slate left by 1940 made Rotterdam the testbed for Dutch architecture, and OMA and MVRDV both work from here. The Rotterdam Architecture Biennale and Het Nieuwe Instituut anchor the scene.
Higher education & applied research
Erasmus University, Rotterdam School of Management, Hogeschool Rotterdam, Codarts, Willem de Kooning Academie
Erasmus is unusual among Dutch universities in being built around economics, business and medicine rather than a full classical faculty spread — which shapes the graduate labour market noticeably.
