The naval base is home to almost two-thirds of the Royal Navy's surface fleet, including both Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers, the Type 45 destroyers and the mine countermeasures and fishery protection squadrons. It is the reason the city exists at this scale and the reason the local engineering wage floor is higher than the retail-and-tourism economy around it would suggest — but most of it sits behind security vetting.
The port, ferries & logistics

The port is owned and operated by Portsmouth City Council itself — a rare arrangement in Britain — and the council reckons it contributes about £390m to the national economy and £189m locally, supporting around 5,590 jobs. It runs more international destinations than any other UK port, sailing to Caen, Cherbourg, St Malo, Le Havre, the Channel Islands, Santander and Bilbao, and it now hosts the Solent Freeport's Portsmouth customs site.
Marine technology & sailing
BAR Technologies, Athena Racing at the Camber, the Ben Ainslie sailing operation, marine autonomy and survey firms around Old Portsmouth
The America's Cup campaign that set up on the Camber left behind an unusual cluster: BAR Technologies took the wing-sail aerodynamics developed for racing and turned it into WindWings for cargo ships. Portsmouth is one of very few places in Britain where high-performance sailing, defence marine engineering and commercial shipping sit within a mile of each other.
Higher education & research
University of Portsmouth, the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, the Centre for Enzyme Innovation
Portsmouth is a post-1992 university with genuinely front-rank research pockets: its cosmology institute works on the international dark-energy surveys, and its enzyme centre grew out of the plastic-digesting PETase work that made global news. It is also the reason a city of this size has around 25,000 students competing for the same terraced houses you are.

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust at Queen Alexandra, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Hampshire and Isle of Wight ICB
Queen Alexandra at Cosham is the acute hospital for Portsmouth, south-east Hampshire and a large slice of the Isle of Wight's transfers, and its £58m replacement emergency department opened on 26 November 2024. Community and mental health services moved into the new Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare trust on 1 October 2024, so older references to Solent NHS Trust are out of date.
Heritage, retail & visitor economy
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, the National Museum of the Royal Navy, the Mary Rose Trust, Gunwharf Quays, the Spinnaker Tower, the D-Day Story
Three warships spanning four centuries — the Mary Rose, HMS Victory and HMS Warrior — sit in one dockyard beside a designer outlet centre and a 170-metre viewing tower. The visitor economy is large, and like every seaside economy it is seasonal, which matters if hospitality is the sector you are arriving into.
