Nature · Between Bom Fim and Cidade Baixa

The city's central park and its living room — a 37-hectare stretch of lawns, lakes and old trees with the Sunday Brique antiques market along one side.

Local tip: Sunday morning is the whole point: the Brique, families with flasks of chimarrão on every lawn, and a chess crowd that has been there for decades. Bring a flask and sit down; that is genuinely all the social protocol required.

Food · Central, by the Guaíba

An 1869 market hall of fishmongers, spice stalls and lunch counters, at the heart of a historic centre that took water in the 2024 flood and is still recovering.

Local tip: Eat at the counters upstairs rather than the sit-down restaurants — the Gambrinus bar has been there since 1889. Walking the centre with someone who was here in May 2024 is the fastest way to understand the city's flood geography.

Landmark · Waterfront, edge of the Centro Histórico

A 1928 power station with a 117-metre chimney, converted into a cultural centre, standing where the city watches the sun set over the water.

Local tip: The Guaíba sunset is genuinely one of the great ones and locals treat it as a scheduled event. The Usina itself was inundated in the 2024 flood, so check what is open before you go — and take the Cisne Branco boat out onto the water for the version most residents have never done.

Nightlife · Just south and east of the centre

The bar quarter — João Alfredo and General Lima e Silva in Cidade Baixa, and the older Jewish and student district of Bom Fim around the Redenção.

Local tip: Cidade Baixa is where the city goes out and it goes out late, from Thursday. Bom Fim is the quieter, more residential half of the same scene and has the better bookshops and cafés. Note that Cidade Baixa flooded in 2024 when the pumping stations failed.

Neighborhood · North-central

The smartest district in the city — the Parcão park, Rua Padre Chagas, the best restaurants and the highest ground in central Porto Alegre.

Local tip: The Parcão on a Saturday morning is where half the neighbourhood is, chimarrão in hand. The area's height above the Guaíba is not incidental — it is one of the reasons prices here rose after 2024 while low-lying districts fell.

Nature · 100–130 km north

Italian-settled hill country — the wine valleys around Bento Gonçalves and Garibaldi, and the alpine-styled tourist towns of Gramado and Canela.

Local tip: Gramado is the famous one and is essentially a theme park; the Vale dos Vinhedos an hour away is the better weekend. Go in April for the harvest or in July when the serra is genuinely cold and the wineries have fires lit.
