UPMC employs more than 63,000 people and is the largest non-governmental employer in western Pennsylvania. That concentration is why a mid-sized city has a world-tier medical research base — and it is also why the Highmark relationship matters to your insurance choice more here than in most cities.
Robotics, AI & autonomy
Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute and NREL, Aurora Innovation, Astrobotic, Gecko Robotics, Seegrid, Carnegie Robotics
The cluster is a direct spin-out of Carnegie Mellon, and it is unusually deep for a city this size — around 140 robotics companies in the region. It is also volatile: Argo AI, the self-driving company founded here in 2016, shut down in 2022. Treat the sector as real but concentrated in a handful of well-funded firms.
Higher education
University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, Point Park, Chatham, Community College of Allegheny County
Pitt and CMU sit adjacent to each other in Oakland, which is the reason the neighbourhood functions as the city's second downtown. CMU's computer science and drama schools both draw internationally, so the graduate-student rental market is a distinct season of its own.
Financial services
PNC Financial Services Group, BNY Mellon operations, Federated Hermes, Dollar Bank
PNC is headquartered here and is one of the largest banks in the country — a genuine corporate HQ layer that most cities of Pittsburgh's size do not have. Federated Hermes anchors an asset-management niche downtown.
Energy, materials & advanced manufacturing
EQT, Wabtec, Kennametal, PPG Industries, Alcoa legacy operations, Shell's Beaver County petrochemical complex
The steel mills mostly went, but the materials science did not. Marcellus shale gas made EQT one of the largest US natural-gas producers, and Wabtec's locomotive business is a rare heavy-manufacturing headquarters. The Shell cracker plant an hour down the Ohio is the region's largest recent industrial investment and a live local argument.
Software & consumer tech
Duolingo, Google Pittsburgh, Meta and Apple offices in Bakery Square and the Strip District, Philips Respironics, Aurora
Duolingo is the city's headline homegrown consumer tech company. The big-tech presence here is engineering-office rather than headquarters, historically tied to CMU recruiting — which makes hiring cycles here follow Silicon Valley's more closely than the rest of the local economy does.
