Things to do in Odesa

Landmark · Prymorskyi district, above the port

The 1841 giant staircase down the escarpment to the harbour — 192 steps built with a deliberate optical trick so the flight looks longer from below and the landings vanish from above — with a plane-tree boulevard along the top and the working port directly beneath.

Local tip: Walk down at dusk and look at what is actually below you: cranes, grain terminals and gantries, not a marina. Understanding that the postcard sits on top of a war-critical industrial facility is the fastest way to understand Odesa.

Culture · Chaikovskoho Lane, Prymorskyi

An 1887 Viennese-baroque opera house by Fellner and Helmer, gilded and rococo inside, still running a full repertoire through the war with performances timed so the audience gets home before curfew.

Local tip: Tickets are cheap by any European standard and often available on the day. Check the start time twice — evening performances begin earlier than you expect, for the obvious reason.

Food · By the railway station, Prymorskyi

Trading since 1827 and still the real food market of the city — bull-calf butchers, cheese rows, barrels of pickles and brine, and a fish hall where Black Sea gobies and mackerel are sold by people who will tell you exactly how to cook them.

Local tip: Go before ten, bring cash and small notes, and haggle without embarrassment — it is expected and the first price is not the price. The fish hall is the part worth crossing the city for; the fruit rows outside are tourist-priced.

Culture · Nerubaiske, north-west of the city

Over two thousand kilometres of limestone quarry tunnels under and around Odesa — the largest such network anywhere — cut to build the city above and later used by partisans, smugglers and the desperate.

Local tip: Go only with a guide, on a marked route. People die in these tunnels with some regularity, and — important — they are not part of the city's air-raid shelter network, so do not treat them as an option during an alert.

Neighborhood · South along the coast from the centre

The long tree-lined boulevard running from the centre towards Arkadia past sanatoria, embassies, film studio grounds and the best-preserved stretch of pre-revolutionary villa architecture in the city.

Local tip: Walk it end to end once and you will understand the city's property map better than any listing site can explain it. Take the side turnings towards the sea — the cliff-top paths and the descents to the water are where locals actually go.

Nature · Between the centre and Frantsuzkyi Boulevard

The city's big seaside park on the old fortress ground, dropping through trees to the Lanzheron beach and the coastal path — Odesa's default place to run, walk a dog or sit and look at the water.

Local tip: The seafront path from Lanzheron towards Otrada is the best walk in the city. Note where the shelters along the shore are as you go; there is a reason they were installed between here and the 16th station of Fontan.
