Find practices covering your postcode on the NHS website and register with one. Practices should not demand proof of immigration status, though most ask for proof of address. Jesmond, Sandyford and Heaton practices absorb a very large student intake each September — register before it.

Buy a prescription prepayment certificate if you take anything regularly
England charges per item dispensed. A prepayment certificate covers unlimited NHS prescriptions for three or twelve months at a fixed price, can be paid by Direct Debit instalments, and breaks even at about two items a month. Nobody at the pharmacy counter will offer it.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Prescriptions are free an hour north of here and are not free here.

Scotland abolished the charge in 2011; Wales and Northern Ireland did the same; England still levies a per-item fee. Newcastle is closer to the Scottish border than to most of England, so people routinely arrive having read the wrong guidance. If you take regular medication, this is a real annual cost you can cap but not avoid.

The surcharge is charged per year of leave and paid up front with the visa. It entitles you to care — and then nothing happens. Until you register with a GP your only route into the system is A&E, which is the worst entry point for anything routine.

Newcastle has far more specialist capacity than a city of 300,000 normally would.

The Freeman runs one of Europe's largest cardiothoracic transplant programmes, and the Newcastle Fertility Centre is the only UK site licensed for mitochondrial donation. For anything unusual you are likely to be treated in the city rather than referred hundreds of miles — an advantage that never shows up in a cost-of-living comparison.
