What to know before you go
Register with the police within 72 hours of arriving
CriticalUK government advice is explicit: if you stay in Chad more than 72 hours you must register with the police, at the Commissariat Central on Avenue General Kerim Nassour, taking a passport photograph. This is not the residence card and it does not replace it — it is a separate, immediate obligation that catches almost every first-time arrival, and it has become materially more consequential since the National Police began generalised checks on foreigners' papers in May 2026.
Since May 2026 your visa is invalid unless it came from evisa.td
CriticalChad generalised its e-visa on 11 May 2026: all visa applications must now be lodged on the official platform run by the Direction des Étrangers et de l'Immigration, and from 21 May 2026 any visa issued outside it is treated as invalid and no longer admits you. Diplomatic and courtesy visas remain with the foreign ministry. Manual entry authorisations have been abolished. Every guide written before mid-2026 describes a system that no longer exists.
Name the province, not the country — but do not soften the capital either
CriticalThe FCDO advises against all travel to Borkou, Ennedi Ouest, Ennedi Est and Tibesti, to the western part of Kanem including Nokou, to the Lake Chad region, and within 30 km of Chad's other borders; a state of emergency was declared in the Lac province on 7 May 2026 after Boko Haram attacks on the Barka Tolorom base killed at least 26 soldiers, closing the province's borders and imposing a curfew. None of that is N'Djamena. What is N'Djamena: an 'all but essential travel' advisory covering the capital, armed robbery in some residential areas specifically targeting foreign nationals, and a requirement to get Ministry of the Interior authorisation before travelling outside the city.
The heat is a budget line and a health risk
CriticalN'Djamena's average daily high in April is 42.0°C; its coolest month, August, still averages 31.8°C. The World Bank put Chad's electrification rate at 12%, with the great majority of generation from diesel, and in May 2026 Chadian media reported residents of the capital enduring temperatures above 40°C made worse by power cuts that left families without fans. Budget a generator or inverter and air conditioning as infrastructure rather than comfort, and plan outdoor work outside the 11:00–16:00 window the way local moto-taxi drivers do.
Cholera was confirmed in the capital in July 2026 — treat water accordingly
CriticalThe Ministry of Public Health and Prevention confirmed a cholera epidemic in N'Djamena by circular dated 24 July 2026, following laboratory analysis of gastroenteritis cases, a month after an outbreak in the Karal district of Hadjer-Lamis province that recorded 167 cases. The ministry's own advice is strict hygiene, regular handwashing, drinking safe water and eating well-cooked food, and reporting any suspected case to the nearest health centre immediately. Drink treated or bottled water, including for teeth, and treat any diarrhoea as urgent rather than as an inconvenience.
N'Djamena is genuinely one of the world's most expensive cities for foreigners
ImportantMercer's 2024 Cost of Living City Ranking placed N'Djamena 21st in the world — the third-highest-ranked African city, after Bangui and Djibouti. That is not a paradox in a low-income country: it is what happens when almost everything a foreign household buys is imported by road into a landlocked capital. Agency listings put a four-bedroom villa in Klémat at XAF 1,500,000 a month while a concession in Habbena lets for XAF 400,000. Price your package against the imported basket, not the local one.
