India has no digital nomad or freelancer route. Salaried work means an employer-sponsored employment visa carrying a minimum annual salary, applied for from your country of residence before travel. Once you land, a fourteen-day registration clock starts from the immigration stamp. The application is filed online through e-FRRO and normally decided without a visit โ which matters more here than in Mumbai or Pune, because the office with jurisdiction over your Nagpur address is on the other side of the state.

You may drive on a valid foreign licence with an International Driving Permit for a limited period after arrival, then need an Indian licence from the Nagpur RTO through Parivahan. Nagpur is, by Indian standards, an unusually easy city to drive in โ a radial road network with real ring roads, two operating metro lines and traffic that is dense rather than gridlocked. The bigger change is regional: the Samruddhi expressway, fully open since June 2025, cut the drive to Mumbai from around sixteen hours to eight.

PAN first, then the account, then UPI. Which account you may open turns on your residential status under the Foreign Exchange Management Act โ not on your visa and not on your income tax status, which are three different tests. Someone employed in India is generally FEMA-resident and opens an ordinary resident savings account rather than an NRE or NRO account. In a city with a small foreign population, branch staff default foreigners to NRO more often than in Mumbai, and correcting that later is tedious.

Employer group cover is the normal route and Nagpur's private hospitals are good and inexpensive by any international measure, with an AIIMS opened here in recent years adding real tertiary capacity. Two things shape health specifically. Vidarbha's summer is a genuine medical risk rather than a discomfort โ this is one of India's hottest regions and heat illness here is a seasonal clinical reality. And the monsoon brings the usual mosquito-borne load to a region with substantial rural and forest interface.

You are resident if you spend 182 days or more in the financial year, or 60 days plus 365 across the preceding four. Most new arrivals then land in RNOR โ Resident but Not Ordinarily Resident โ for two or three years, during which foreign income is generally outside Indian scope. The new regime is the default and the old regime must be actively elected. The local point is an asymmetry inside Maharashtra: Nagpur pays the state's professional tax exactly as Mumbai and Pune do, but was not among the cities promoted to the 50% house rent allowance band in 2026 โ Pune was.

What to know before you go
Maharashtra requires a permit to drink, and two districts next door are dry
CriticalUnder the Maharashtra Prohibition Act 1949, possessing or consuming liquor without a permit is an offence โ one-day, one-year and lifetime permits are issued by the State Excise Department, and the penalties on the statute are real even though enforcement against ordinary consumers is inconsistent. Almost nobody tells newcomers this, in Mumbai or here. Nagpur adds a second layer: two of the districts adjoining it in Vidarbha, Wardha and Gadchiroli, are under full prohibition, so an hour's drive can put you in a dry district where possession is a straightforward offence. Chandrapur was dry from 2015 and had its ban lifted in 2021, which is why older guidance disagrees. Get a permit, and check the district before you carry anything out of the city.
In Maharashtra your rental agreement must be registered โ this is not the eleven-month workaround you read about
CriticalSection 55 of the Maharashtra Rent Control Act 1999 requires every tenancy and leave-and-licence agreement to be in writing and registered, regardless of duration. That is materially different from Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and most of India, where an eleven-month agreement is notarised and registration only bites at twelve months. Stamp duty is 0.25% of the total rent for the licence period plus the refundable deposit, and the registration fee is a flat โน1,000 in an urban area. It can be done online. If it is not registered and a dispute arises, the law presumes the tenant's version of the terms is correct unless the landlord proves otherwise โ so an unregistered agreement is a problem for your landlord, not for you, but it also leaves you without a document anyone will act on.
Register with e-FRRO within 14 days โ Nagpur has no FRRO of its own
CriticalIf your visa is valid for more than 180 days you must register within 14 days of the arrival stamp. FRRO Mumbai has jurisdiction over the whole of Maharashtra, roughly 800 km west; local Foreigners Registration Officer duties are performed by the police here. In the normal case this is irrelevant because the application is filed and decided online through e-FRRO โ but if you are called in, you are being called to another city on the far side of the state. Line up an address you can evidence before the fortnight is out, and ask your employer for a guest-house or serviced-apartment letter to register against if the lease will not be ready in time.
This is the state's second capital, and for a few weeks each winter that is not ceremonial
ImportantUnder the Nagpur Pact of September 1953, agreed when Vidarbha's Marathi-speaking districts joined the new state, Nagpur was made Maharashtra's second capital and at least one session of the legislature is held here each year. In practice that is the winter session: the government, the press corps and a large part of the state's administrative apparatus physically relocate to the Vidhan Bhavan for a few weeks, hotels fill, and central Nagpur's traffic and security arrangements change. The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court sits here permanently. If your work touches state government at all, the winter session is the most important few weeks of your year.
May is genuinely dangerous, not merely hot
CriticalNagpur is routinely among the hottest large cities in India, with 47ยฐC recorded in the worst Mays and the surrounding Vidarbha districts regularly topping the national temperature tables. This is deep-continental dry heat with no coast to moderate it. Between March and June, arrange outdoor work and errands before eleven in the morning, treat the afternoon as unusable, and take heat illness seriously rather than treating it as discomfort. The compensation is a short, genuinely pleasant winter from December to February, which is exactly when the legislature and the orange crop both arrive.
You are closer to a tiger than in any other Indian city in this app
Good to knowPench is roughly ninety minutes north, Tadoba-Andhari about three hours south, and Umred-Karhandla and Bor are closer still. Nagpur is the aviation and road gateway to India's densest cluster of tiger reserves, and safaris here are a weekend thing residents actually do rather than a bucket-list trip. Core-zone permits are booked online well in advance through the forest department and sell out for weekends and holidays; buffer-zone safaris are easier to get and increasingly productive. Build it into how you think about living here โ it is the strongest single argument for the city that nobody puts in a relocation brochure.

Deekshabhoomi
Culture ยท Near Nagpur University, central-south
The white dome โ among the largest hollow stupas in Asia โ marking where Dr B. R. Ambedkar and several hundred thousand followers converted to Buddhism on 14 October 1956, founding the Navayana movement.
Local tip: Come on an ordinary weekday morning when it is quiet and the scale registers, or on Dhammachakra Pravartan Din each Vijayadashami when well over a million people arrive and the whole city reorganises around it. This is the most historically consequential place in central India and most visitors leave without knowing it exists.
Zero Mile Stone
Landmark ยท Civil Lines
A sandstone pillar and four stone horses marking the Great Trigonometrical Survey's reference point, from which distances across colonial India were measured.
Local tip: It takes four minutes to see and sits on a traffic island, which is the joke and the point. The metro station named after it is the easier way to get there than driving.
Sitabuldi Fort

The 1817 hilltop fort that decided the battle for central India, now an army installation and closed almost all year.
Local tip: It opens to the public on just three days a year โ Republic Day, Independence Day and 1 May. If you are here on one of them, go; if not, you cannot, and no amount of asking changes it. Almost nobody outside Nagpur knows this.
Pench & Tadoba

Two of India's most productive tiger reserves, with Nagpur as the airport and road gateway to both โ plus Umred-Karhandla and Bor closer in.
Local tip: Core-zone permits open online through the forest department well ahead and sell out for weekends. Buffer zones book more easily and sightings there have been excellent in recent years. Go in the hot months if you actually want to see a tiger โ April and May concentrate animals at the waterholes.
Ambazari Lake & Futala
Nature ยท West of the city
The city's two main lakes โ Ambazari with a long walking loop and a garden, Futala with a promenade, a musical fountain and a line of food carts.
Local tip: Futala after dark on a weekday is where Nagpur actually goes out. The tarri poha and the chaat carts along the road are better than anything you will find in a restaurant, and the whole thing is a few hundred rupees.
Dragon Palace Temple
Culture ยท Kamptee, 20 km north
A white Japanese-funded Buddhist temple in a landscaped garden, built in the 1990s and quietly one of the most beautiful modern buildings in the region.
Local tip: Pair it with Deekshabhoomi for a day that explains why Nagpur is a centre of Indian Buddhism at all. Go early โ it is calm, the sandalwood Buddha is worth the trip, and the gardens are properly kept.
