Milwaukee County Transit System runs a dense bus grid across the county including bus rapid transit on the Wisconsin Avenue corridor, and the Hop streetcar is free through downtown, the Third Ward and the lower East Side. The compact core plus a flat topography makes the East Side, Riverwest, Walker's Point and the Third Ward genuinely liveable without a car.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Milwaukee charges three layers of vehicle registration fee, and no vehicle property tax at all.

The state fee, the Milwaukee County wheel tax and the City of Milwaukee wheel tax all apply to a car registered at a city address, which locals grumble about. What they do not always notice is what is absent: Wisconsin has no annual personal property tax on vehicles, so a car worth $40,000 costs the same to register as one worth $8,000. Against Missouri or North Carolina that is a large net saving on an expensive car.

The emissions test is free, and Wisconsin has no safety inspection at all.

Milwaukee and six neighbouring counties require emissions testing, but the state runs the testing network and does not charge for it — unusual in this app, where Baltimore and Charlotte both charge. And unlike North Carolina, Wisconsin does not inspect ordinary passenger cars for safety at all. The overall vehicle compliance burden here is among the lightest of any US city in this app.

The lake makes the weather locally, not regionally.

'Cooler near the lake' is a real forecast phrase here — the lakefront can run several degrees colder than Wauwatosa on a spring afternoon and warmer in early winter, and lake-effect snow bands can dump on one part of the county and miss another. Check a forecast for your actual neighbourhood rather than for the metro.
