London Luton Airport, easyJet's head office, TUI Airways, Wizz Air UK, Signature and the business-aviation operators, ground handling and engineering firms
This is the town's economic centre of gravity. Three airlines run their UK head offices from the airport, which means Luton has corporate aviation employment — commercial, network planning, crew, engineering, finance — and not merely airport jobs. It also means the local economy is unusually exposed to a single sector, which the town found out in 2020.
Logistics & distribution
Warehousing and fulfilment along the M1 and the A6, air cargo operators, retail and grocery distribution centres in Dunstable and Houghton Regis
Luton sits at the junction of the M1, the A1 corridor and the Midland Main Line, an hour from central London and inside the Golden Triangle of UK distribution. The warehousing that has spread across the Dunstable and Houghton Regis edge of the town is now a bigger employer than the vehicle plant ever was in its final years.

Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, East London NHS Foundation Trust's Bedfordshire services, Luton Borough Council's adult social care
The Luton and Dunstable is the acute hospital for the town and merged with Bedford Hospital on 1 April 2020 to form Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, so the two sites are one organisation. Health and care is among the most reliably sponsorable employment in the town.
Higher education
University of Bedfordshire's Luton campus, Barnfield College, the Luton Sixth Form College
The University of Bedfordshire's main campus sits in the middle of the town centre rather than on the edge, which is unusual and does a lot of work for the centre's evening economy. It draws a large international student body, and the accommodation demand that comes with it is one of the pressures on the private rented sector.
Public sector & the airport dividend
Luton Borough Council, Luton Rising, Bedfordshire Police, Central Bedfordshire's Dunstable operations
The council is a large employer in its own right and also, unusually, the owner of an international airport. That relationship — a local authority whose finances are tied to passenger numbers — is the single most distinctive structural fact about Luton and the thing that most often surprises people who move here.
Manufacturing & engineering, in transition
The remaining automotive supply chain, aerospace and precision engineering SMEs, food manufacturing
Vehicle manufacturing ended in 2025 when Stellantis closed the Luton van plant, announced in November 2024, after 120 years of Vauxhall production in the town. A skilled engineering base remains in the supply chain and in smaller firms, but the sector is much reduced and the town is openly working out what replaces it.
