Things to do in Luanda

Landmark · Coqueiros

The 1576 Portuguese fort on the bluff above the bay, the oldest surviving building in the city and for three centuries the administrative heart of the slave trade out of Angola. It now holds the Museu Nacional de História Militar, with tiled panels of the conquest still on the walls.

Local tip: Go for the view, which is the best free panorama of the bay and the Ilha, and go with someone who will tell you what the azulejos are actually depicting. Photography inside the fort is fine; photography of the military installations below it is not.

Culture · Morro da Cruz, Belas — about 25 km south

A small chapel on the beach at Morro da Cruz where captives were baptised before being loaded onto ships, now the national slavery museum. It is deliberately modest and hits far harder for it — Angola was the single largest source of enslaved people shipped to the Americas.

Local tip: Combine it with the Barra do Kwanza on the same road south and make a day of it. Take a driver who knows the turning; the museum is signposted late and easy to miss at speed.

Nightlife · The sandspit off the Baía de Luanda

A narrow strip of restaurants, beach clubs and grilled fish, connected to the city at Chicala and running out to Ponta da Ilha. It is where Luanda goes on a Sunday and where most of the city's visible nightlife happens.

Local tip: The FCDO's advice here is specific and worth following literally: do not walk between venues. Arrive by car, leave by car, and treat the strip between two restaurants as a road rather than a promenade. Sunday lunchtime is the safest and best time to see it.

Nature · Belas, roughly 40 km south on the Estrada da Barra do Kwanza

A wind- and rain-eroded badland of ochre cliffs dropping straight to the Atlantic, named for looking like the surface of the moon. It is the standard first weekend trip out of Luanda and genuinely lives up to it.

Local tip: Late afternoon light is the whole point — the colour is flat at midday. There is nothing there but a viewpoint and vendors, so bring water, and pair it with the Barra do Kwanza river mouth ten minutes further on.

Food · Benfica, Belas

The big craft and produce market on the southern road out of the city — soapstone and blackwood carvings, Mucubal beadwork, baskets, fabric, and a fish section that supplies half the restaurants on the Ilha.

Local tip: Prices start high for a foreigner and negotiation is expected rather than rude — halve the opening number and settle somewhere above two-thirds. Go with kwanzas in small notes; there is no card machine in sight, and offering dollars marks you instantly.

Nature · Across the bay from Corimba — reached by boat

A long sand peninsula sheltering the bay, with calm lagoon water on the inner side and Atlantic surf on the outer. Weekend houses, beach restaurants, and the closest thing Luanda has to a switch-off.

Local tip: You cross by boat from Corimba or Mussulo Marina; agree the return time and price with the boatman before you get in, not after. The lagoon side is for swimming — the ocean side has real undertow and no lifeguards.
