Essential English phrases

Excellent. 'That's boss' is straightforward praise, and it is used far more than 'great'. Nothing to do with your manager.

Delighted. 'I'm made up for you' is the standard way of expressing genuine pleasure at someone else's news, and it is meant.

Good, fine, no problem, and also a description of a person's character. 'He's sound' is high praise. Shared with Manchester and used constantly.

Mate, used to address someone directly — 'alright la'?'. Short for 'lad'. Warm rather than familiar, and used to strangers.

Old-fashioned, dated, past it. Applied to furniture, clothes and opinions alike. Almost unheard outside Merseyside.

Someone from just outside Liverpool proper — St Helens, Widnes, Warrington, parts of the Wirral. Half insult, half sport. Do not deploy it until you understand exactly where the line runs.

Food. 'Getting some scran' means getting something to eat. A dockers' and sailors' word that stuck.

A soft bread roll. Manchester says barm, Leeds says breadcake, the South says bap. Ordering the wrong one is the fastest way to announce you are not from here.

The back alley running between two rows of terraced houses, where the bins go. Yorkshire calls the same thing a ginnel. Every letting agent will mention it and none will explain it.

Packed, crowded. From 'chock-a-block', a rope-and-pulley term off the docks that became everyday speech across the city.

The local property tax, paid by the occupier and billed separately from rent. Most Liverpool housing sits in the lowest bands, but the rate per band is high — check the band of the actual address before you sign.
