A Cypriot residence permit gives you no right to move freely within the Schengen area. You still face whatever entry requirements your nationality attracts when flying to Athens, Frankfurt or Paris, and a Cypriot residence card is not a Schengen one. This is the single most common misunderstanding about living here, and people book flights on the wrong assumption.

A former British colony, and it never changed. Roundabouts, overtaking and turning all run the opposite way to the rest of continental Europe, and hired cars are right-hand drive. If you are coming from mainland Europe rather than the UK, budget a genuine adjustment period rather than assuming it will come naturally.

The General Healthcare System covers you once you are registered as a beneficiary and have chosen a personal doctor. Contributions come out of your salary at 2.65% whether or not you have registered, so failing to register means paying in and getting nothing out. The Special Defence Contribution exemption for non-domiciled residents is the real draw and it runs for up to seventeen years. But it is an exemption from SDC only. Salary, rent and business profits are taxed under the ordinary income tax bands throughout, and the 2.65% GESY charge on dividends applies to non-doms too. '0% on dividends' is a marketing line, not a description.

Limassol has the highest rents in Cyprus by a wide margin, running 40% or more above Nicosia. That is a function of the shipping, forex and professional services concentration and of the seafront towers built for it. If your work is portable within Cyprus, the same salary buys a materially different life forty minutes inland.

Limassol has hosted a large Russian-speaking business community for three decades — schools, shops, law firms and a whole professional services layer grew around it. Sanctions and the 2022 restructuring of Cyprus's Russian-facing financial sector reshaped it substantially, with new arrivals from Ukraine, Israel and elsewhere alongside. Expect the city to be genuinely trilingual in Greek, English and Russian.
