Do not attempt a 24-month contract in your first weeks
Contracts run a credit check and require a UK bank account and address. With no UK credit file you will be declined or asked for a deposit. Rolling one-month SIM-only plans have no credit check and are excellent value.

A rolling SIM-only plan with a large data allowance costs a fraction of a bundled handset contract over the same period and can be switched monthly. Buying the phone outright is almost always cheaper in total.

Check international call and roaming rates before you commit
This is a city with dense family links to India, Pakistan, East Africa, Poland and Romania, and the difference between plans on international minutes and on EU roaming is large. Some rolling plans bundle generous international allowances; some charge per minute. It is worth two minutes of comparison rather than defaulting to the best-known network.

Keep your number when you switch
Text PAC to 65075 and you receive a porting authorisation code by return, valid for 30 days. Ofcom rules require the switch to complete in one working day. Never cancel the old service first — that is how people lose the number.

Order broadband the day you have an address
UK installation takes one to three weeks and may need an engineer visit. Leicester has extensive full-fibre coverage in the newer city-centre stock and patchier coverage across the older terraces of Highfields, Belgrave and the West End — check your exact postcode against more than one provider, because price and achievable speed differ street by street.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The UK has no SIM registration, unlike most of Europe.

Germany, Spain and France all require identity verification to activate a SIM. The UK requires nothing for pay-as-you-go, so a working UK number is a fifteen-minute errand rather than a first-week project.

Ofcom requires networks to issue a porting authorisation code by text on request and complete the switch within one working day. Most people never learn the shortcode and stay on an expired contract tariff for years, which is exactly what the networks are counting on.

Full fibre in Leicester is a postcode lottery, and worth actually checking.

Alternative network operators have built out parts of the city while terraced streets a few hundred metres away still run on older copper-fed products. Two flats on the same viewing list can differ by a factor of ten in achievable speed. Check the specific address, not the neighbourhood.

International minutes are worth optimising here more than in most UK cities.

The plan that is cheapest for domestic use is frequently not the cheapest once you add regular calls to South Asia or Eastern Europe. Several smaller providers build their offer around exactly that, and the annual difference is easily a few hundred pounds.

Common mistakes to avoid
