Prepare the car for the heat before June

Things most newcomers don’t know

Nevada has no foreign licence exchange at all.

Some states maintain reciprocity with a handful of countries whose drivers skip the exams. Nevada does not. However experienced you are, a foreign licence means the knowledge test and normally the skills test, and the skills test means finding a car you are allowed to test in. Plan for two appointments inside the 30 days.

Registration is taxed on the car's value, not at a flat rate.

The Governmental Services Tax is assessed from a depreciating percentage of the original list price, so registering a two-year-old car can cost several hundred dollars a year and a ten-year-old one very little. It is a genuine input into what car to buy, and newcomers expecting a flat plate fee get caught.

Flash floods are the actual driving hazard here, not the heat.

The valley is a bowl of impermeable desert soil laced with dry washes. A monsoon storm miles away in the mountains can push a wall of water through an underpass in minutes, and people drown in vehicles most years. Never drive into standing water, and treat 'turn around, don't drown' as a rule rather than a slogan.

The heat is a maintenance schedule, not a comfort issue.

Sustained 45°C ambient temperatures cut battery life to roughly two to three years, degrade tyres faster, and make a cooling-system fault far more consequential. Locals replace batteries pre-emptively before summer. Carry water in the boot year-round.
