Essential English phrases

Kitchener–Waterloo, treated as one place by everyone who lives here and as two cities by every level of government. Add Cambridge and you get 'the tri-cities' or, more often, just 'the Region'.

The Regional Municipality of Waterloo — the upper-tier government sitting above Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and four townships. It runs the police, the paramedics, public health, water and wastewater, waste collection, social services and the buses. If a service is not parks, local roads, fire or building permits, it is probably the Region's.

Uptown is Waterloo's centre; Downtown is Kitchener's. They are five kilometres and one light rail line apart, and a newcomer who mixes them up will be waiting in the wrong city. Nobody local ever says 'downtown Waterloo'.

The light rail line — 19 km from Conestoga Mall in Waterloo through both centres to Fairway in Kitchener, running since 2019. It is the smallest urban region in Canada with an LRT, and it decided where every new apartment tower got built.

A horse-drawn buggy. Old Order Mennonite communities farm the townships north and west of the city, and their buggies use the same rural roads you do, signposted and slow. Passing one properly is a genuine local driving skill and not a curiosity.

The City of Kitchener sells you natural gas, water, sewer and stormwater directly — it is a municipal gas distributor, which almost nowhere else in Ontario is. Newcomers spend a week looking for Enbridge and never find them.

Highway 8 is the spur that connects the city to the 401, and the 401 is how you get to Toronto — about 100 km, and anywhere between an hour and three depending on the day. The GO train is the alternative, and it is not yet frequent.

The University of Waterloo's co-operative education programme, the largest of its kind in the world. It runs on four-month terms, which is why the rental market, the coffee shops and half the local job listings all move in a January–May–September rhythm.

The Lang Tannery, a converted leather works downtown that houses Communitech and a large share of the region's startups. Shorthand for the whole tech scene: 'a Tannery company' means a small software firm.

Social Insurance Number. No employer can put you on payroll without one. Free, from Service Canada, and usually issued during the visit if you attend in person. It comes before the bank account and before the health card.

What this city was called until 1916, when wartime referendums renamed it after a British field marshal. The German heritage did not go anywhere — it resurfaces every October, and 'Berlin' still appears on old buildings and in the names of local institutions.

The nine-day Kitchener–Waterloo festival every October, the largest Bavarian festival outside Germany, run out of halls and marquees across the region. Gemütlichkeit is the word you will hear shouted; it means roughly convivial warmth and is the whole point.

Police, fire and ambulance. 811 is Health811, the provincial nurse line; 519-570-9777 reaches the Waterloo Regional Police for anything non-urgent, and 519-741-2345 is the City of Kitchener. Note that the police and the paramedics are regional, not municipal.
