Free and completed online. Required for payroll, banking, property and vehicle transactions.

Give the TIN to your employer
Employment income is withheld under PAYE at graduated rates. NSSF contributions are deducted alongside — employee and employer shares.

Work out your residency position
Presence of 183 days or more in a twelve-month period is the principal test. A resident is taxed on income from all sources, not only Ugandan-source income.

Declare income outside PAYE
Consultancy fees, rental income and foreign income are your responsibility even when your salary is fully withheld.

Keep filings current for permit renewals
Tax compliance evidence is commonly requested by employers and in commercial permit renewals. Unfiled returns become an immigration problem, not just a revenue one.

Things most newcomers don’t know
Ugandan residency taxes worldwide income, and 183 days is easier to hit than people expect.
The test runs over a twelve-month period, not a calendar year, so a mid-year arrival can make you resident before your first January. Once resident, income from all sources is in scope — foreign consultancy, rent at home, investment income. People who assume their Ugandan PAYE ends the matter are frequently wrong.

NSSF is a real deduction and it changes the offer comparison.
Employee and employer contributions to the National Social Security Fund sit alongside PAYE, so the gross-to-net gap is wider than the income-tax rate suggests. Comparing a Kampala offer with one from Nairobi or Kigali on gross salary alone gives you the wrong answer — ask for a net illustration in both.

The TIN is free, fast and gates more than tax.
Banks ask for it, property and vehicle transactions require it, and payroll needs it. It costs an afternoon online and removes a dependency from three other processes. There is no reason to leave it until someone demands it.

Withholding tax turns up in places employees do not expect.
Uganda applies withholding tax across a wide range of payments — professional fees, rent, goods and services above thresholds. If you do any consultancy alongside employment, or let out property, the payer may withhold and you will need to reconcile it in your return. Discovering that at filing time rather than at invoicing time is the expensive order.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming PAYE settles everything when you also have consultancy or foreign income.
- Counting 183 days against the calendar year rather than a twelve-month period.
- Comparing regional offers on gross salary and ignoring NSSF.
- Invoicing consultancy without allowing for withholding tax at the payer's end.
- Leaving the TIN until a bank or a landlord demands it.
