The Johor–Singapore Causeway. Locals say 'tambak' or just 'the Causeway'; the other crossing is always 'the Second Link'. Which one you use defines your morning.

Immigration / Customs. The signs at both crossings are in Malay first. 'CIQ' — customs, immigration and quarantine — is what everyone calls the complex itself.

Boleh / Tak boleh
BO-leh / tak BO-leh
Can / cannot. Malaysians use these constantly in English sentences, and 'boleh lah' is a soft yes rather than an enthusiastic one.
Balik kampung
BAH-lik KAM-pong
To return to one's home village. Around major festivals the whole country moves, the Causeway becomes impassable, and JB empties and fills in waves.

Exchange rate. In JB it is a daily topic, because a large share of the population earns Singapore dollars and spends ringgit — the rate is your effective pay rise or pay cut.

An Indian-Muslim restaurant, usually open all hours. Roti canai and teh tarik at 2am after a late crossing is a JB institution.
