There is no post-arrival registration in the US: your I-94 record is your status. In the first weeks you need a Social Security number if work-authorised, or an ITIN if not. Indiana expects a new resident to obtain an Indiana driver's licence within 60 days, and the BMV requires documentation of lawful status — a credential issued to a temporary visa holder is limited to the period of authorised stay. The good news relative to the other US cities here is throughput: Indiana's BMV branch network is dense, many transactions can be started online, and appointment waits are shorter than in Texas or California.

Indiana gives new residents 60 days to obtain an Indiana driver's licence and 60 days to apply for an Indiana title on an out-of-state vehicle, with a $30 administrative penalty per vehicle for a late title application. Indiana requires no annual safety or emissions inspection for passenger vehicles in Marion County — Lake and Porter counties near Chicago are the only Indiana counties with an emissions programme — which makes the registration process simpler here than in Texas or California. Indiana levies a flat adjusted gross income tax — 2.95% for tax year 2026, scheduled to step down to 2.90% for 2027 — and every Indiana resident additionally owes a county income tax determined by where they lived on 1 January. Marion County's rate is 2.02% for 2026, putting an Indianapolis resident at roughly 4.97% combined. The county tax follows RESIDENCE, not workplace, which is the opposite of Columbus's or Detroit's city taxes and means a move across a county line changes your rate. Sales tax is 7% statewide with no local addition anywhere in Indiana, and unprepared food is exempt. Property tax is capped by the state constitution at 1% of gross assessed value for a homestead, 2% for other residential and farmland, and 3% for business — and Senate Enrolled Act 1 of 2025 restructured the deductions underneath that ceiling on a six-year phase-in starting with 2026 bills.

What to know before you go
Your income tax has two layers, and the county one follows where you live
CriticalIndiana levies a flat state adjusted gross income tax — 2.95% for 2026, scheduled to fall to 2.90% for 2027 — and every Indiana resident additionally owes a county income tax set by the county they lived in on 1 January. Marion County's rate is 2.02% for 2026, so an Indianapolis resident is paying roughly 4.97% in state and local income tax combined. Crucially the county rate follows your residence, not your workplace, which is the opposite of how Ohio and Michigan city taxes work. Check the Department of Revenue's Departmental Notice #1 for the current year's rates before you assume a suburb is cheaper.
Medicaid work requirements start on 1 January 2027, and the lookback started in October 2026
CriticalIndiana's Medicaid expansion runs through the Healthy Indiana Plan. Work and reporting requirements for HIP begin on 1 January 2027 — 80 hours a month of work, school, apprenticeship or qualifying activity — with a three-month lookback, meaning anyone applying or renewing in January 2027 needs to be able to evidence activity from October 2026 onward. If HIP is or may be your coverage, start keeping the records now rather than discovering the requirement at renewal. Exemptions exist; the state's own HIP pages are the place to check whether one applies to you.
You have 60 days for the licence AND the vehicle title, and the second one carries a penalty
CriticalIndiana gives new residents 60 days to obtain an Indiana driver's licence and 60 days to apply for an Indiana title on any out-of-state vehicle. The title deadline is the one with teeth: a late application carries a $30 administrative penalty per vehicle. BMV branches here are more available than in most large US metros and many transactions are online, but the title transfer is not one of them — budget a branch visit with the out-of-state title in hand.
Check which municipality your address is actually in
ImportantIndianapolis and Marion County merged in 1970, but Beech Grove, Lawrence, Southport and the town of Speedway were excluded and still run their own city governments, police departments and ordinances inside the county. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is not in Indianapolis; it is in Speedway. Residents of the excluded cities still pay county taxes, receive county services and vote for the Unigov mayor — but permits, code enforcement, local police and some services are their municipality's. Verify the jurisdiction of a specific address rather than the postal town.
The property tax ceiling is constitutional, and the rules changed for 2026
ImportantIndiana wrote its circuit breaker caps into the state constitution: property tax cannot exceed 1% of gross assessed value on a homestead, 2% on other residential property and farmland, and 3% on business property. That is a genuinely harder ceiling than Ohio or Texas offers. Senate Enrolled Act 1 of 2025 then restructured the deductions underneath it — phasing out the fixed standard homestead deduction in favour of a larger supplemental deduction over six years, and adding a new credit worth 10% of the bill up to $300 starting with bills issued in 2026. Renters pay this through the rent; buyers should model the new schedule rather than an old bill.
This is the Crossroads of America and it is built for the car
Good to knowMore interstate highways converge on Indianapolis than on any other US city, which is why the FedEx Express hub and a vast distribution sector are here — and why the metro is comprehensively car-dependent. IndyGo runs the Red and Purple bus rapid transit lines, and the 24-mile Blue Line to the airport is under construction with an expected 2028 opening. Downtown and the near neighbourhoods are genuinely walkable thanks to the Cultural Trail and the Monon; almost nowhere else is. Budget a car, and price the insurance before you sign a lease in an outer township.

Lilly is headquartered here and is the anchor of the entire regional economy — its expansion in the incretin and diabetes space has driven a multi-billion-dollar manufacturing build-out across central Indiana. Roche's US diagnostics headquarters, Corteva and Elanco all put their global or North American head offices in the metro, and IU's medical school is one of the largest in the country by enrolment.
Logistics & distribution
FedEx Express (its second-largest global hub, at Indianapolis International Airport), Amazon, Walmart and Kroger distribution, a dense third-party logistics layer
Indianapolis calls itself the Crossroads of America because more interstates converge here than anywhere else in the country, and the airport is consistently among the busiest US airports by cargo volume. It is the sector with the most entry-level hiring in the metro, and the reason so much warehouse development sits on the west and south sides.
Advanced manufacturing & aerospace
Rolls-Royce North America, Allison Transmission, Cummins (Columbus, Indiana), Stellantis Kokomo, a large supplier base across central Indiana
Rolls-Royce's North American defence aero-engine business is headquartered in downtown Indianapolis and is one of the city's largest engineering employers. Allison Transmission has built heavy-duty automatic transmissions on the west side for a century. Much of this work is defence-adjacent, so citizenship or clearance requirements are common — worth checking early.
Sports business & events
NCAA national headquarters, USA Track & Field, USA Gymnastics, USA Diving, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Colts, Pacers and Fever
The city deliberately built an amateur-sports economy from the 1970s onward and it worked: the NCAA moved its national office here, several national governing bodies followed, and the convention and stadium infrastructure downtown was sized for it. The Indianapolis 500 is the single largest single-day sporting event in the world by attendance, and Gen Con — the largest tabletop gaming convention in North America — fills the city every summer.
Insurance, finance & technology
Elevance Health, OneAmerica, Salesforce, Genesys, High Alpha, Infosys, KAR Global
Elevance Health — formerly Anthem — is a Fortune 500 insurer headquartered downtown. The tech scene is real but concentrated: Salesforce occupies the tallest building in the state and runs one of its largest offices here after acquiring ExactTarget, Genesys grew out of Interactive Intelligence, and High Alpha is a venture studio that has produced a steady stream of B2B software companies. This is the sector where remote and hybrid work is most normal.
Health systems, government & higher education
IU Health (Methodist, University and Riley hospitals), Ascension St. Vincent, Community Health Network, the State of Indiana, IU Indianapolis and Purdue University in Indianapolis
Indianapolis is a state capital and the seat of Marion County, so government is a large and stable employer. Riley Hospital for Children is the state's only comprehensive children's hospital. The former IUPUI campus was formally split on 1 July 2024 into IU Indianapolis and Purdue University in Indianapolis — a change recent enough that older guidance still refers to an institution that no longer exists under that name.

Monument Circle and the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument
Landmark · Dead centre of downtown
The 1902 limestone monument at the exact centre of the city's street grid, with an observation deck near the top and a war memorial museum in the basement.
Local tip: You can climb the 331 steps, or take the small lift for a nominal fee — most residents have never done either. Indianapolis has more acreage dedicated to war memorials than anywhere in the country outside Washington, DC, and the plaza north of the Circle is where you see it.
The Indianapolis Cultural Trail
Neighborhood · Threading the six downtown cultural districts
An eight-mile protected path for walking and cycling, separated from traffic, linking Mass Ave, Fountain Square, the Wholesale District, Indiana Avenue, the Canal and White River State Park.
Local tip: Ride it end to end on a bike-share in an afternoon and you will have seen more of the real city than a week of driving gives you. The Fountain Square leg passes under the old interurban viaduct and is the best stretch.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway and its museum
Landmark · Town of Speedway — not, technically, Indianapolis
A 2.5-mile oval opened in 1909, the highest-capacity sports venue in the world, with a museum of race-winning cars inside the infield and a golf course crossing the track.
Local tip: Outside race month you can usually take a bus lap of the track and, on some tours, kiss the bricks at the start-finish line. Main Street in Speedway, just outside turn one, has become a genuinely good bar and restaurant strip that has nothing to do with the race.
Fountain Square
Nightlife · South-east of downtown
A compact former streetcar suburb of two-storey brick storefronts, now the city's densest concentration of music venues, bars and small restaurants, with two floors of vintage duckpin bowling above the theatre.
Local tip: First Friday here is the art walk that actually has people at it. Duckpin bowling at the Fountain Square Theatre building is the standard 'take a visitor somewhere Indianapolis' answer, and it deserves to be.
Newfields and the 100 Acres art and nature park
Culture · North-west of downtown, on the White River
The Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Lilly House, formal gardens and a 100-acre park of large-scale outdoor commissions along the river and around a lake.
Local tip: The 100 Acres park is free and open beyond museum hours; the floating 'Funky Bones' sculpture in it is the one people photograph. Go for the park, not just the galleries.
The Monon Trail and Broad Ripple
Hidden gemNature · North side, running to Hamilton County
A rail-trail on the old Monon Railroad corridor running from downtown north through Broad Ripple Village and out to Westfield, with a canal towpath running parallel closer in.
Local tip: The Monon is the commuting and running spine of the north side and the reason property prices step up within a block of it. Broad Ripple after dark is a student and nightlife district; the same village on a Saturday morning, at the farmers' market, is a completely different place.
